What is network engineering?

Network engineering is a field of information technology focused on designing, implementing, managing, and maintaining computer networks. Network engineers ensure that data can move efficiently and securely between devices and locations, whether within a single office or across the globe. They work with hardware like routers, switches, and firewalls, as well as software to optimize performance and troubleshoot issues. Network engineers play a critical role in keeping organizations connected and their communications secure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking protocols, network design, troubleshooting, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with routers, switches, firewalls, and certifications like Cisco CCNA/CCNP or CompTIA Network+ are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help network engineers excel in diagnosing issues and collaborating across teams. These skills are critical to ensure reliable, secure, and efficient network operations within an organization.

What are some common challenges network engineers face when managing large-scale enterprise networks?

Network engineers in large-scale enterprise environments often encounter challenges such as maintaining network security across multiple sites, ensuring minimal downtime during upgrades or outages, and troubleshooting complex connectivity issues. Balancing the need for high performance with scalability and cost efficiency can also be demanding. Collaboration with cybersecurity, systems administration, and support teams is essential to address these challenges effectively and to keep the network resilient and efficient.

What is the difference between Network Engineering vs Network Administration?

AspectNetwork EngineeringNetwork Administration
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco Certified Network ProfessionalCCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesigning, planning, and implementing network solutionsManaging, maintaining, and troubleshooting existing networks
ResponsibilitiesBuilding new networks, optimizing performance, and scaling infrastructureMonitoring network health, configuring devices, and resolving issues

Network engineering focuses on designing and developing network systems, while network administration involves managing and maintaining those networks. Both roles require similar certifications and often work closely within the same industry, but their core functions differ in scope and focus.

Are network engineers still in demand?

Network engineers are currently in high demand due to ongoing growth in internet usage, cloud computing, and cybersecurity needs. They typically require skills in network design, troubleshooting, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+ to stay competitive in the job market.

What jobs can you do as a network engineer?

A network engineer can work in roles such as network administrator, systems engineer, network architect, or security engineer. These positions involve designing, implementing, managing, and troubleshooting computer networks, often requiring knowledge of networking protocols, hardware, and certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+.

Intersect develops, constructs, and operates the most ambitious power and data center infrastructure in the country by co-locating industrial demand with dedicated gas and renewable power generation.

Intersect was acquired by Google in March 2026 and operates as an independent subsidiary. We are developing and constructing multiple gigawatts of energy and data center projects in the U.S., enabling more data center and generation capacity to come online faster. Weโ€™re on an aggressive growth trajectory and looking for people hungry to tackle the largest energy challenges on the planet.

Location & Team Gatherings

We are currently looking for candidates located within 60 miles of any of the listed location.

We connect as a team at our Team Week experiences four times a year and at our recently established Hub locations - SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, NY; Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Calgary, AB; and Toronto, ON.

About This Role

As an OT Network & Site Infrastructure Engineer on Intersect's Corporate IT team, you'll build and secure the physical and logical communication backbones that connect our utility-scale clean energy facilities to corporate systems and the grid. You'll operate as the primary on-site technical authority for greenfield infrastructure deployments, establishing resilient IT/OT network segmentation, managing enterprise firewalls, and integrating industrial detection tools across our solar, storage, and generation assets. Partnering closely with Engineering, SCADA, and Operations teams, you'll ensure continuous, secure telemetry and high operational uptime across distributed sites. This role is planned to start on August 3, 2026.

Location: Dallas, Houston, Abilene, Pampa, or Amarillo

Team Overview

This team plays a critical role in advancing Intersect's mission to accelerate the clean energy transition. The Corporate IT and OT Infrastructure team designs, secures, and maintains the digital tissue connecting remote field assets, control systems, and enterprise tools. Joining this team means stepping into a high-ownership environment with a lean hierarchy, driving greenfield network implementations from scratch, and growing alongside cross-functional experts dedicated to operational excellence.

What You'll Do

Architect and Implement Greenfield OT Networks

  • Deploy and configure industrial switches, Palo Alto firewalls, and routing infrastructure across new clean energy site locations.
  • Establish robust IT/OT network segmentation architectures adhering to industry best practices and NERC CIP controls.

Maintain Field Security and Remote Access Platforms

  • Administer secure remote access solutions including Site-to-Site VPNs, Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), and dedicated jump servers.
  • Integrate and manage OT Network Intrusion Detection Systems (Nozomi, Claroty, Dragos) alongside CrowdStrike endpoint protection across remote locations.

Troubleshoot Communication Networks and SCADA Connectivity

  • Diagnose and resolve complex industrial network issues affecting SCADA Ignition connectivity, RTU telemetry, and field sensors.
  • Perform site-level network performance optimization, bandwidth management, and failover validation to maintain high asset availability.

Provide On-Site Technical Leadership

  • Serve as the primary technical authority on-site during commissioning and integration, directing vendor activities and physical network handoffs.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with IT, SCADA, and Field Operations to establish standardized network configuration, documentation, and monitoring procedures.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Network Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent industrial field experience.
  • 5+ years of network and infrastructure engineering experience, with explicit focus on OT, industrial control systems, or utility environments.
  • Hands-on expertise administering enterprise and industrial network hardware (Palo Alto, Cisco, Hirschmann) and implementing IT/OT segmentation standards (Purdue model).
  • Proven track record managing remote access architectures (S2S VPN, ZTNA, jump servers) and troubleshooting SCADA/Ignition network communication layer issues.
  • Direct experience deploying OT threat detection platforms (Nozomi, Claroty, or Dragos) and endpoint detection (CrowdStrike).
  • Self-directed operational mindset, comfortable acting as the primary technical authority on project sites with up to 50% travel.
  • Strong collaborative instinct and alignment with Intersect's core values of Equity, Humility, Authenticity, Long-run Value, and People Come First.
