Revenue Accounting Technology
The Revenue Accounting Technology Team develops and supports critical systems that ensure Southwest's revenue is accurately processed and delivered across financial platforms supporting both airline and non-airline products. As a Software Engineer Intern, you will contribute to large-scale enterprise initiatives involving cloud transformation, system integrations, and financial data processing while gaining exposure to platforms such as SIRAX and BRIM. You'll partner with experienced Engineers and business stakeholders to support revenue-generating initiatives and modernization efforts that improve operational efficiency and reduce technology costs. This internship offers a unique opportunity to see how technology solutions drive revenue management and support strategic business growth.
AIR OPERATIONS:
Airline Products
The Airline Products Team is leading a strategic modernization initiative to transform and migrate Amadeus-based data feed services to a cloud-native platform on AWS. As a Software Engineer Intern, you will work alongside experienced Engineers, Architects, and Product Teams to support the design, development, testing, automation, and deployment of scalable cloud-based solutions. You'll gain hands-on experience with modern software engineering practices while contributing to efforts that enhance reliability, operational efficiency, and speed to market. This internship provides valuable exposure to cloud migration initiatives and the technologies that power Southwest's airline product ecosystem.
Air Traffic Management
The Air Traffic Management Team develops technology solutions that support flight operations, improve situational awareness, and enable real-time operational decision-making across the airline. As a Software Engineer Intern, you will collaborate with experienced Engineers to design, develop, test, and enhance applications that support critical operational functions. You'll gain exposure to modern software development practices while working on complex technical challenges in a fast-paced environment where innovation and reliability are essential. NOC Support
The NOC Support Team develops and supports mission-critical Tier 1 applications that power Southwest's Network Operations Center (NOC), including Flight Planning Integration, Tactical Flight Execution, BackupOps, and other operational systems. As a Software Engineer Intern, you will work alongside experienced Engineers to enhance and support these critical applications while gaining hands-on experience with modern cloud-native technologies, including AWS Serverless, DynamoDB, Confluent Kafka, and AI-assisted development tools. You'll contribute to the design, development, testing, and delivery of reliable solutions that support round-the-clock airline operations. This internship provides valuable exposure to highly visible operational systems and the technologies that help keep Southwest running safely and efficiently.
Additional Details
  • The Intern will work full-time as a Software Engineer Intern within the Technology Department. This role is offered as a remote workplace position, which may require travel for trainings, meetings, conferences, etc. Outside of those required visits, the majority of your working time may be spent in an approved remote location, away from our Corporate Campus. Please note, while this is a remote position, there is limited group of states or localities ineligible for Employees to regularly perform their work off-site. Those ineligible locations are: Alaska, California, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, New Hampshire New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming, and Puerto Rico.

  • U.S. citizenship or current authorization to work in the U.S. required and no current or future work authorization sponsorship available.

The duties and responsibilities of the Software Engineer Intern may include but are not limited to:
  • Analyze, design, write program code, test, document, and implement functionally appropriately, technically sound, and well-integrated application systems in accordance with Customer requirements, and organizational methodologies and standards.

  • Respond to production problems and implement immediate resolution efforts across technology areas.

  • Maintain awareness of technology trends in area of responsibility.

  • Meet commitments and deliverables related to participating in projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Coursework or experience with scripting languages such as: NodeJS, Java, JavaScript, C#, and Python

  • Coursework or experience with AWS Cloud services and infrastructure, including S3, Lambdas, Dynamo, Event Bridge, ECS, and Kinesis

  • Coursework or experience with and Kafka

  • Coursework or experience with Workday fundamentals and Workday integration concepts

  • Coursework or experience with XML, XSLT, XPath, JSON, and data-transformation fundamentals

  • Coursework or experience with REST and SOAP API fundamentals

  • Coursework or experience with software testing techniques preferred; XRay

  • Coursework or experience with DevOps, DevSecOps and automation

  • Coursework or experience with CI/CD

  • Coursework or experience with Jira

  • Coursework or experience with Agile or Scaled Agile (SAFe) methodologies

  • Ability to stay organized and manage multiple and concurrent assignments under tight deadlines preferred

  • Previous internship or work experience as a Software Engineer within the past 12 months preferred

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based, Customer service-oriented environment with a high regard for hospitality

  • Demonstrate programming aptitude and ability for logical and abstract thinking

  • Problem solving ability and strong written/verbal communications skills preferred

  • Works well in a culture that is open, direct, respectful, courteous, and compassionate preferred

Time Commitment and Pay
  • Required: Full-time 40hrs a week

  • Must maintain a consistent weekly schedule during normal business hours at a max of 8hrs per day

  • Program Dates: January 26, 2027 - April 23, 2027

  • $26 - $30 /hour, corresponding with progress towards degree completion

  • Receive free unlimited space available travel privileges for yourself (taxes and fees may apply on international travel)

  • Interns will be provided with any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship

Education
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required

  • Progress towards degree, major, or minor in Cybersecurity, MIS, Business, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or Information Technology, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering OR similar degree

  • Progress towards a 4-year undergraduate degree or graduate degree is required

  • To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student (as defined by your university) at the time of application and during the internship

  • 1-2 semesters remaining at the time the internship ends is preferred

  • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application is required

Basic Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986

  • You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process

  • This position requires authorization to work in the United States as a permanent employee without sponsorship now or in the future
