Automation Engineer Intern Learning Objectives

  • The Automation Engineer Intern will work alongside Application Engineers, Controls Operations Manager and Systems Integration Specialist in our Solutions Group to participate in the automation of a project's installation and engineering. The Intern will be involved in valve sizing, sensor selection, programming, and commissioning.
  • Training and Technology: Tridium Software, Trane Software, Procore, BG HVAC 101
  • Building Automation Systems: Learn how to install, program and commission building automation systems
  • Learn how to read construction documents (drawings, scopes, sequence, specs, purchase orders)
  • Learn how to manage sub-contractors for the installation of the HVAC controls
  • Learn how to use Trane Tracker TU software for controller configuration and custom function block programming
  • Learn how to use Tridium Niagra Workplace for integrating control systems and building graphical user interfaces
  • Learn to functionally teset HVAC systems and controls including control loop PID tuning
  • Team meetings: Observe and participate in Project team meetings
  • Troubleshooting and repairing HVAC system components and controls: May have the opportunity get hands-on experience with damper/valve actuator operation and linkages, differential pressure sensor troubleshooting and calibration, BACnet MSTP and/or Lonworks communication, and VFD and motor starter control wiring
  • Automation System Drawings: Work alongside experienced design professionals to produce automation system drawings. This hands-on experience will include: designing installation specs specific to a given project, establishing sequences of operation for the HVAC equipment, sizing of control valves and damper actuators, and designing network riser diagrams, point schedules, system flow diagrams, bill of materials, panel layouts, and termination drawings utilizing AutoCAD.
  • Cross-Functional Learning - Learn about Project Management and Engineering roles through shadowing members of each team
