What is a .NET Web API Developer?

A .NET Web API Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building and maintaining web APIs using Microsoft's .NET framework. These APIs enable different software systems to communicate over the web, often supporting front-end applications or mobile apps. The developer is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and deploying RESTful services that are secure, efficient, and scalable. They often work with technologies like C#, ASP.NET Core, and Entity Framework, and are skilled in integrating various data sources and services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a .NET Web API Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a .NET Web API Developer, you need solid programming skills in C#, experience with ASP.NET Core, and a good understanding of RESTful API design, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with development tools such as Visual Studio, version control systems like Git, and knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., Azure) or certifications in .NET technologies are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively make a developer stand out in this role. These skills ensure the creation of robust, scalable, and maintainable web services that meet business and user needs.

What is the difference between Net Web Api Developer vs ASP.NET Developer?

AspectNet Web Api DeveloperASP.NET Developer
Primary FocusDesigning and developing Web APIs for data exchangeBuilding web applications using ASP.NET framework
Required SkillsWeb API, C#, .NET, REST, JSONASP.NET, C#, MVC, Razor, Web Forms
Work EnvironmentBackend API development, server-side logicFull-stack or web application development
Common UsageCreating services for mobile apps, integrationsDeveloping enterprise web applications

While both roles involve .NET technologies, a Net Web Api Developer specializes in creating APIs for data exchange, whereas an ASP.NET Developer focuses on building complete web applications using ASP.NET frameworks. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope and primary responsibilities.

What are the most common challenges a .NET Web API Developer faces when integrating APIs with front-end applications?

One of the most common challenges .NET Web API Developers encounter is ensuring seamless communication between the back-end APIs and diverse front-end frameworks. Issues such as handling CORS, authentication, consistent data formatting, and version control can arise during integration. Developers also need to coordinate closely with front-end teams to clarify API specifications and troubleshoot integration bugs. Proactive documentation, regular communication, and thorough testing are essential strategies to overcome these challenges, ensuring a smoother development workflow.

Job description

Senior Software Engineer (Mobile/.NET MAUI)

Reports to: Development Manager

Salary: Up to $140,000

OnTheClock is looking for a Senior Software Engineer with strong expertise in .NET MAUI or Xamarin Forms mobile development to join our growing engineering team. You'll specialize in our iOS and Android mobile app development while working full-stack across our .NET backend APIs and Vue.js web app. OnTheClock is a successful Michigan-based SaaS company serving over 160,000 monthly active users with time tracking, scheduling, and payroll solutions.

OnTheClock is investing in engineering excellence, and we're building out a strong internal engineering team. As we scale toward our ambitious long-term goal of reaching 1 million users, we need exceptional software engineers who want to help continue building the technical foundation, culture, and practices for our team alongside other engineers.

You'll contribute to technical decisions, refining engineering best practices, and help us modernize and optimize systems that serve thousands of small businesses. You'll work across our full stack (Vue.js, .NET, SQL Server, MAUI, AWS) and contribute to decisions that will define our technical direction for years to come.

We're establishing a culture of engineering excellence, one that values initiative, continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and high standards. You'll work alongside other software engineers who are passionate about their craft, challenge each other to grow, and care deeply about delivering quality software. This is a place where your ideas matter, your growth is prioritized, and your impact is immediate.

You'll get to:

  • Join an internal engineering team in its early build-out, with fresh leadership and vision
  • Influence technical strategy and architecture decisions
  • Work on meaningful problems that impact 160,000+ users and help small businesses succeed
  • Modernize and scale systems toward our ambitious long-term goal of reaching 1 million users
  • Grow your skills across the full stack while leveraging your current expertise
  • Experiment with AI coding assistants and emerging tools to boost productivity
  • Enjoy work-life balance, flexibility, and a supportive team environment

We're a small company, building out a new engineering team. You'll wear multiple hats, work across the stack, and have a broad impact. If you're looking for narrow specialization (that you might find at a larger company), this won't be a good fit for you.

If you're a senior engineer who wants ownership, variety, impact, and the chance to help establish engineering excellence, not just maintain what already exists, keep reading.

Our Current Tech Stack (What You Will Be Working With)

  • Backend: C#, .NET, Web API, Entity Framework, MediatR (CQRS)
  • Frontend: Vue.js 3, Nuxt 3, TypeScript, Pinia, Vite, Bootstrap Vue

  • Build, maintain, and optimize third-party integrations (e.g., payroll providers)
  • Contribute technical expertise across projects, offering architecture input, system design recommendations, and best practices
  • Modernize and refactor legacy services while balancing technical debt reduction with feature delivery
  • Conduct thorough code reviews, raising the bar for code quality and helping the team make better technical decisions
  • Collaborate closely with the Development Manager, Product team, and fellow engineers, to shape the technical roadmap and prioritize engineering initiatives
  • Debug and resolve production issues using monitoring tools like New Relic and Sentry, participating in an on-call rotation to ensure system reliability
  • Work on AWS infrastructure (EC2, S3, IAM), CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions), and DevOps processes to improve deployment reliability and developer productivity

  • Strong full-stack capabilities (proficient)
    • Willing and able to work across backend (.NET/C# Web API), web frontend (Vue.js), database (SQL Server), and infrastructure (AWS)
    • Not just a mobile specialist, you can ship features end-to-end
  • Strong SQL Server or relational database experience (proficient)
  • Experience with production support, monitoring tools (New Relic, Sentry, or similar), and comfort with on-call rotation (proficient)
