Nesting Programmer information

What are some common challenges Nesting Programmers face when optimizing material usage, and how can they be addressed?

Nesting Programmers often encounter challenges such as minimizing material waste, managing irregular part shapes, and accommodating machine limitations. To address these, they use advanced nesting software that leverages algorithms to arrange parts efficiently on raw materials. Collaboration with production and design teams is also vital to ensure that the nesting layouts are feasible and that any changes in part specifications are promptly integrated. Continuous learning about new software features and staying updated on best practices can further help Nesting Programmers improve outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Nesting Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nesting Programmer, you need strong skills in CAD/CAM software, mathematical aptitude, and a background in manufacturing or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with nesting software like SigmaNEST, AutoCAD, or ProNest, as well as knowledge of CNC machinery, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help optimize material usage and collaborate with production teams. These skills are crucial for maximizing efficiency, reducing waste, and ensuring smooth workflow in fabrication processes.

What is a Nesting Programmer?

A Nesting Programmer is a specialist who creates and optimizes computer programs that arrange parts or shapes efficiently on raw materials for manufacturing processes, such as metal fabrication, woodworking, or textiles. Their main goal is to minimize material waste and maximize production efficiency by using software to 'nest' parts in the best possible layout. They work closely with CAD drawings and manufacturing machines, ensuring that cutting or fabrication is both cost-effective and meets production requirements. Nesting Programmers often need strong analytical skills and familiarity with industry-specific software. This role is crucial in industries where material costs and production speed are paramount.

What is the difference between Nesting Programmer vs CAD Programmer?

AspectNesting ProgrammerCAD Programmer

About Cosmo Cabinets & Klovo
Cosmo Cabinets is a family-owned, vertically integrated manufacturer of kitchen and bath cabinets based in Eatonton, GA - 350,000 sq ft of production, 1,000 cabinets a day, shipping nationally.
Klovo (klovo.com) is our premium garage cabinet brand. The Klovo line is a modular system of flat-pack garage cabinet sets sized for your wall- available in pre-designed configurations ranging from 2 ft to 16 ft for workshops, home gyms, home offices, and storage walls. Cabinets ship flat, assemble in 2-3 minutes each using the proprietary GlideLock connector system (no cam locks, no Allen wrenches), and hold 500 lbs per cabinet. The product is made in the USA at a manufacturing facility in Atlanta.
The product is live and selling.
Klovo is already on the market at klovo.com and through retail partners. The Product Engineer we hire will own the existing line - improving it, expanding it, and ensuring the Atlanta factory executes to spec. This is not a concept-stage role.
What This Job Actually Is
You are the technical owner of the Klovo product line. Every component spec, every BOM, every engineering drawing, every packaging detail, and every change to the GlideLock connector system runs through you. You manage the relationship with the Atlanta manufacturing facility to make sure what's being built matches what's been designed - and you own it when it doesn't.
You also own the product roadmap on the engineering side: new SKU configurations, new cabinet types, value engineering to hit cost targets, and whatever the retail channel requires for compliance and submission. The product is already in the market - your job is to make it better and grow it.
Responsibilities
Product Ownership
  • Own all engineering drawings, part specifications, and 3D models for the Klovo cabinet line - TFL laminate panels, PVC edgebanding, GlideLock connectors, hinges, drawer slides, and packaging components
  • Maintain and update the full BOM library for every SKU in the 2-16 ft product range; ensure accuracy across all configurations (tall lockers, base cabinets, wall cabinets, worktops, drawer towers)
  • Lead engineering changes from initiation through production release: document the change, assess impact on existing BOMs and packaging, coordinate with the Atlanta facility, and validate the first article
  • Expand the SKU line: design new configurations, accessory SKUs, and cabinet types to meet retailer requirements and consumer demand - while maintaining GlideLock system compatibility
  • Own the GlideLock connector system technically: monitor field performance, drive design improvements, and validate any changes through structural testing before release

Atlanta Factory Management
  • Serve as the day-to-day technical interface with the Atlanta manufacturing facility: translate design intent into clear production specifications and hold the factory to them
  • Conduct regular production reviews at the Atlanta facility: inspect finished cabinets against spec, review in-process quality data, and track defect rates by SKU
  • Lead root cause analysis on any production quality escapes - edgebanding failures, connector fitment issues, panel dimensional variation - and own corrective action through closure
  • Manage engineering change implementation at the factory: sequence changes to minimize disruption, validate that new components are built to spec before full-production release

Retail Execution & Packaging
  • Engineer and maintain flat-pack packaging for each SKU: panel nesting layouts, damage protection, master carton specs, and labeled assembly sequencing - all designed to meet retailer pack-out requirements
  • Write and maintain consumer assembly instructions for all configurations; validate with test assemblers before retailer submission
  • Manage product submissions to retail partners: samples, spec sheets, compliance documentation, UPC/GTIN setup, and planogram data - on the retailer's timeline
  • Track and respond to retailer product feedback through the approval and review process; own corrective actions on any product or packaging findings

Cost & Value Engineering
  • Build and maintain Excel-based cost models for every SKU; track landed cost against target retail margins and flag variances
  • Drive value engineering: identify material substitutions, component consolidations, or spec changes that reduce unit cost without compromising the Klovo quality standard
  • Develop capital justifications for tooling, fixtures, or equipment changes at the Atlanta facility when required; present ROI analysis to management

What You Need
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Product Design, or a related technical field
  • 3+ years of product engineering experience in a furniture, storage, cabinetry, or consumer hard goods environment - ideally with wood-based panel products (TFL, melamine, MDF, or plywood)
  • Proficient in AutoCAD or comparable 3D CAD; able to produce production-ready part drawings and flat-pack packaging layouts
  • Hands-on understanding of panel product construction: edge banding methods and quality standards, hinge and drawer slide selection, and flat-pack engineering for consumer RTA assembly
  • Strong Excel skills: BOM management, cost modeling, and landed-cost tracking
  • Experience managing a contract manufacturer or outsourced factory - able to write a clear production spec, conduct a floor audit, and drive corrective action
  • Organized and self-directed: able to manage multiple SKUs, an active engineering change log, and retailer deadlines simultaneously without a large team behind you
Preferred
  • Direct experience with garage or closet storage products
  • Familiarity with mechanical connector or fastener systems used in RTA furniture (cam locks, dowels, snap-fit, or similar)
  • Experience working on a big-box retailer's product submission and compliance process (Home Depot, Lowe's, Costco, or similar)
  • Knowledge of CARB/TSCA compliance for composite wood products
  • Experience with UPC/GTIN setup and retail item setup processes

Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Relocation assistance is considered for out-of-area candidates
