Ndt Assistant information

What is an NDT assistant?

NDT Assistants are entry-level professionals who support Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technicians and engineers in inspecting materials and structures without causing damage. Their main responsibilities include preparing equipment, assisting with test setup, recording data, and ensuring safety protocols are followed during testing procedures. They play a key role in the quality control process of industries such as manufacturing, construction, and aerospace, helping to detect defects or irregularities in products or structures. NDT Assistants often work under the supervision of certified NDT personnel and may pursue further training and certification to advance in the field.

What does an NDT assistant do?

As an NDT assistant, you help perform nondestructive testing on a property, usually before the owner sells it to someone else. In this role, you may inspect the quality of each material used in its construction, use various techniques to conduct an analysis of hard-to-reach areas, and otherwise help the primary tester conduct their business. NDT assistants often work on larger properties like apartment complexes that can be hard for a single inspector to evaluate, and rarely work without an on-site supervisor. Depending on the needs of each inspection, you may work as part of a team of assistants rather than being the sole assistant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NDT assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NDT Assistant, you need a basic understanding of non-destructive testing methods, attention to detail, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent; some employers may require specific safety or industry certifications. Familiarity with NDT equipment, data recording systems, and safety protocols is important, and OSHA or specific NDT method certifications (such as ASNT) can be valuable. Strong communication, teamwork, and the ability to follow precise instructions help you stand out in this support role. These skills and qualifications ensure accurate testing processes, uphold safety standards, and support efficient team operations in industrial or construction environments.

What are some common challenges faced by NDT assistants during inspections, and how can they be managed?

NDT Assistants often face challenges such as working in confined spaces, handling sensitive equipment, and following strict safety protocols. These tasks require attention to detail, effective communication with NDT Technicians and supervisors, and adherence to regulatory standards. To manage these challenges, it's important to stay up-to-date with safety training, ask questions when unsure, and develop strong organizational skills. Building experience in different testing methods and environments can also help assistants become more adaptable and effective in their roles.

What is the difference between Ndt Assistant vs Ndt Technician?

AspectNdt AssistantNdt Technician
CertificationsBasic safety and introductory NDT trainingAdvanced certifications like ASNT Level I or II
Work EnvironmentSupport role, assisting with equipment and prepPerforming actual testing and inspections
ResponsibilitiesPreparing materials, setting up equipmentConducting tests, analyzing results

The Ndt Assistant typically supports Ndt Technicians by preparing materials and equipment, while Ndt Technicians perform the actual nondestructive testing and analysis. Both roles are essential in the inspection process, but the Technician role requires more advanced certifications and hands-on testing skills.

Is NDT assistant hard to get into?

Becoming an NDT assistant typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent, along with training in nondestructive testing methods such as ultrasonic, radiographic, or magnetic particle testing. Entry can be competitive, and obtaining certifications like ASNT Level I or II can improve job prospects, but the role often serves as an entry point into the NDT field with on-the-job training provided.

Which Ndt Assistant job pays the most?

The highest-paying NDT Assistant positions are typically found in industries such as oil and gas, aerospace, and power generation, especially for roles requiring advanced certifications like ASNT Level III. Salaries can range from $50,000 to over $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the complexity of inspections performed. Specialized skills and certifications often lead to higher compensation in this field.

Job description

Description:

RAM Aerospace has been powering flight and space exploration since 1975, delivering precision solenoids, valves, actuators, LVDTs, and RVDTs for commercial, defense, and space applications. Operating from facilities in St. George, Utah and Valencia, California, we build mission-critical components that the world's leading aerospace programs depend on. Join a team that builds the future of aerospace, on time, with excellence. Your career takes off here!

As an NDT Technician II at RAM Aerospace, you bring certified expertise and real depth to the inspection team responsible for protecting the integrity of components that power flight and space exploration. Working primarily with magnetic particle (MT) and fluorescent penetrant (PT) inspection methods, you will independently perform inspections to detect corrosion, defects, or other detrimental conditions in accordance with strict written criteria, interpreting indications and reporting results with the judgment that comes from real experience. Beyond your own inspection workload, you will serve as a technical resource and informal mentor to less experienced technicians, sharing your expertise and helping build NDT capability across the team, even without formal supervisory authority. If you are a certified, seasoned NDT professional who takes pride in precision and wants your expertise to shape the people around you, this role gives you the platform to do it.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • NDT Inspection & Reporting: Independently perform liquid penetrant and magnetic particle inspections to detect discontinuities and ensure quality, in accordance with applicable specifications and standards. Interpret and report inspection results with confidence and accuracy, maintaining full traceability in all inspection records and documentation.
  • Technical Mentorship & Guidance: Serve as a go-to technical resource for less experienced NDT technicians, sharing your expertise on inspection techniques, indication interpretation, and procedural interpretation. Help train and develop team members informally, strengthening the team's overall NDT capability even without formal supervisory responsibility.
  • Equipment & Certification Support: Assist with the setup and calibration of nondestructive testing equipment, and help establish proper examination techniques for objects under inspection. Support the maintenance of RAM's NADCAP NDT certification, and perform NDT inspections for which you are certified.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality teams to resolve inspection and quality issues, applying testing criteria consistently and evaluating results with sound technical judgment.
  • Safety & Compliance: Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by adhering to Company and customer safety standards and legal regulations, alerting others to potential hazards or concerns. Utilize safe work practices at all times, including the safe handling of chemicals used in NDT processes.
Requirements:
  • Legal: Must be able to pass a comprehensive criminal background check and drug screening.
  • ITAR: Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum (due to ITAR requirements).
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical training preferred.
  • Current NDT Level II certification per NAS410 (or RAM's written practice equivalent) in Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) and Fluorescent Penetrant Testing (PT) required.
  • Minimum 5 or more years of relevant NDT or manufacturing inspection experience, with demonstrated depth sufficient to work independently and mentor less experienced technicians.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • General knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • Proficient with basic math and science principles. Technical reading capability required.
  • Mechanical inspection experience is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail with exceptional safety and quality awareness.
  • Strong work ethic, dependable, and able to work independently with little to no supervision.
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and work effectively within a team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to train and mentor others and interface directly with customers when needed.
