What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NC programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an NC Programmer, you need a strong background in CNC machining, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and blueprint reading, typically supported by relevant technical education or certifications. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam, SolidWorks, or Siemens NX and knowledge of G-code programming are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure accurate program development and collaboration with production teams. These skills are vital for producing precise, efficient machining programs that maximize productivity and minimize errors in manufacturing.

What is an NC programmer?

NC Programmers, or Numerical Control Programmers, are professionals who create programs and instructions for computer-controlled machines, such as CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. They use specialized software to convert engineering drawings and specifications into precise code that directs machines on how to manufacture parts. NC Programmers play a vital role in industries like manufacturing, aerospace, and automotive, ensuring components are produced accurately and efficiently. Their expertise helps streamline production processes and maintain high-quality standards.

What challenges do NC programmers face when working with complex machinery or new manufacturing processes?

NC Programmers often encounter challenges such as interpreting intricate engineering drawings, adapting programs for machines with varying capabilities, and troubleshooting unexpected issues during test runs. Collaborating closely with machinists and engineers is essential to ensure programmed instructions align with real-world machine functions and tolerances. Staying updated on the latest CAM software and machine technologies also helps address these challenges and ensures efficient, error-free production.

What is the difference between Nc Programmer vs CNC Machinist?

AspectNc ProgrammerCNC Machinist
Primary RoleDesigns and develops CNC programs to control machine toolsOperates and sets up CNC machines to produce parts
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of CAD/CAM software, programming languages, and machine operationMachine operation skills, blueprint reading, and basic programming knowledge
Work EnvironmentTypically works in engineering or programming departmentsWorks directly on the shop floor operating CNC machines
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and metalworking industriesCommonly employed in manufacturing and machining facilities

While both Nc Programmers and CNC Machinists work closely with CNC machines, Nc Programmers focus on creating the programs that control machine operations, often working in design or engineering roles. CNC Machinists operate and set up the machines based on those programs, executing the manufacturing process on the shop floor.

Senior Quality Assurance Engineer - Consumer Hardware

iFIT

Logan, UT • On-site

$75K - $85K/yr

Full-time

Posted 24 days ago

Job description

iFIT's vision is to create the world's most holistic health and fitness platform, integrating all elements of health - physical fitness, mental health, nutrition and active recovery - into a seamless interactive experience. We develop proprietary software that learns and adjusts to the habits of each person as it delivers immersive content that guides them on their own individual fitness journey.
We are currently seeking an ambitious pace-setter to join our team as a Senior Quality Assurance Engineer - Consumer Hardware, onsite in Logan, Utah.
iFIT is looking for a detail-oriented and driven Customer Quality Engineer to serve as the closed-loop owner between iFIT customers and our supply base. In this role, you will translate field failures, warranty data, and out-of-box experience issues into root cause investigations and corrective actions with suppliers and internal engineering. A great day means a recurring customer complaint gets traced to a true root cause, a supplier CAPA closes effectively, and Cost of Poor Quality trends down on the next report.
ROLE COMMITMENTS
  • Improve the customer experience by driving measurable improvement in the Perfect Order Index through targeted quality initiatives and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Sustain earnings by achieving Cost of Poor Quality warranty targets through proactive quality management and supplier accountability.
  • Champion AI adoption by implementing at least one AI initiative focused on replacing repetitive or highly manual quality tasks to improve team efficiency and employee experience.
  • Increase profitability by reducing Cost of Poor Quality through QPA investigations and continuous quality improvement activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Drive reduction of Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) by analyzing customer complaints, warranty data, and out-of-box experience trends, then leading corrective actions back through engineering and suppliers.
  • Facilitate Root Cause Analysis using 8D, 5-Why, and FMEA methodologies on supplier and product quality issues, owning each case to verified, effective closure.
  • Operationalize QMS policies, procedures, and work instructions on the production floor, and support audits, customer visits, and factory acceptance tests.
  • Partner with Design and Manufacturing Engineering to define process parameters and validate supplier process capability against product requirements.
  • Prepare quality performance reports and recurring training for the Quality team, and communicate with foreign vendors after hours as needed.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Education and Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Engineering, from an accredited university or college.
  • Available to work a minimum of 3 days in-office in Logan, Utah.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Quality, Manufacturing, Operations, or Materials.
  • Demonstrated understanding of corrective, containment, and preventive action processes.
  • Proven root cause analysis skills with cross-functional facilitation ability.
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Ability to read schematics and mechanical drawings and comfortable using measurement tools such as calipers, multimeters, scales, and hardness testers.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in consumer products, fitness equipment, connected hardware, or durable goods.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks; 3Dconnexion SpacePilot experience a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with SPC, DFMEA/PFMEA, Weibull Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, and Six Sigma methodology.
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Six Sigma Green/Black Belt certification.
  • Experience working with overseas contract manufacturers in China, Taiwan, or Vietnam.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 QMS rollouts and audit support.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with strong critical thinking skills and the ability to inspire the same in others.
