Are you a curious and open-minded individual interested in programming and machine learning? Thomson Reuters Labs in Toronto is seeking an ML/NLP scientist intern with a passion for problem-solving using state-of-the-art Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing techniques.

As an intern, you will be part of a diverse, interdisciplinary global team of experts. We hire specialists in Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing, and Machine Learning, as well as Engineering and Design to drive the company's digital and AI transformation. Thomson Reuters Labs is known for consistently delivering successful data-driven Artificial Intelligence solutions in support of high-growth products that serve Thomson Reuters customers in new and exciting ways.

This Thomson Reuters Labs team contributes to several major products that serve research and workflow products to tax and accounting professionals. It is the fastest growing segment of our company, in terms of organic revenues. We are looking for internship candidates on the cutting edge of AI to join us in delivering automation to our tax and accounting customers through transformative enhancements to these products.

About the role
As a data scientist/research scientist intern, you will:

  • Experiment and Develop: You can be involved in the entire model development lifecycle, building, testing, and delivering high-quality solutions.

  • Collaborate: Working on a collaborative cross-functional team, you will learn from and partner with colleagues across the globe.

  • Innovate: You will have the opportunity to try new approaches and learn new technologies. You will contribute ideas and work on solving real-world challenges.

About You:

  • PhD student/recent graduate, or MSc recent graduate in a discipline relevant to NLP/IR/ML/Statistics,

  • Practical and relevant experience building NLP/IR/ML systems, from ideation to implementation,

  • Software engineering skills for prototyping,

    • Proficiency in implementing solutions using Python, DL and agentic frameworks, and relevant tools,

    • Experience in using code collaboration and versioning systems such as Github,

    • Familiarity with cloud tools such as Amazon AWS, MS Azure, or Google Cloud,

  • Data-driven problem-solving and decision-making mindset,

  • Curious and innovative disposition capable of proposing outside-the-box solutions,

  • Comfortable in communicating (verbal and written) complex AI solutions to audiences with diverse technical backgrounds.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Ability to translate academic research into working prototypes and experience experimenting with novel NLP/IR/ML models to solve real-world problems,

  • Familiarity with generative AI, large language models (LLMs), and agentic, observability and LLM tracing frameworks,

  • Self-driven attitude and ability to work with limited supervision,

  • Team player and comfortable to collaborate with internal team members and external stakeholders,

  • Comfortable in working in fast-paced, agile environments managing uncertainty and ambiguity,

  • Publications at relevant venues such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGIR, KDD, or similarvenues are a bonus.

  • The preferred length of an internship position is 8 months.
