What is a natural language processing intern?

A Natural Language Processing (NLP) Intern works on projects related to computational linguistics, machine learning, and text analysis. Responsibilities may include preprocessing text data, training and fine-tuning language models, implementing NLP algorithms, and evaluating model performance. Interns typically collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and researchers to improve and deploy NLP solutions for tasks such as sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, or chatbot development. This role requires proficiency in programming languages like Python, familiarity with NLP libraries such as TensorFlow or spaCy, and a strong foundation in machine learning concepts.

What types of projects or tasks does a natural language processing intern typically work on during their internship?

As a Natural Language Processing Intern, you can expect to work on projects such as building or refining text classification models, cleaning and annotating datasets, assisting with the implementation of algorithms for tasks like sentiment analysis or language generation, and analyzing the performance of NLP systems. Interns often collaborate with experienced data scientists, machine learning engineers, and linguists to solve real-world language processing challenges. You may also help research new NLP techniques or work on the integration of models into existing products or services. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to practical NLP workflows and is a great stepping stone for a career in AI or machine learning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a natural language processing intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Natural Language Processing Intern, you need a solid background in programming (especially Python), understanding of machine learning concepts, and coursework or experience in linguistics or NLP techniques. Familiarity with NLP libraries such as NLTK, spaCy, or Hugging Face, and experience using platforms like Jupyter Notebooks and version control systems are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate technical findings clearly will help you stand out. These skills and qualities enable you to effectively support research, analyze language data, and contribute to NLP projects within collaborative technical teams.

Is natural language processing in demand?

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a rapidly growing field with increasing demand for professionals, including NLP interns, as businesses seek to improve automation, customer service, and data analysis. Skills in machine learning, Python, and NLP tools like spaCy or NLTK enhance employability in this expanding industry.

Job description

Kensho is S&P Global's hub for AI innovation and transformation. With expertise in machine learning, natural language processing, and data discovery, we develop and deploy novel solutions to innovate and drive progress at S&P Global and its customers worldwide. Kensho's solutions and research focus on business and financial generative AI applications, agents, data retrieval APIs, data extraction, and much more.

At Kensho, we hire talented people and give them the autonomy and support needed to build amazing technology and products. We collaborate using our teammates' diverse perspectives to solve hard problems. Our communication with one another is open, honest, and efficient. We dedicate time and resources to explore new ideas, but always rooted in engineering best practices. As a result, we can innovate rapidly to produce technology that is scalable, robust, and useful.

Kensho is S&P Global's Engine for AI innovation and transformation. With expertise in Machine Learning and data discovery, we develop and deploy novel solutions for S&P Global and its customers worldwide. Our solutions help businesses harness the power of data and Artificial Intelligence to innovate and drive progress. Kensho's solutions and research focus on speech recognition, entity linking, document extraction, automated database linking, text classification, natural language processing, and more.

About The Team

The strategy team at Kensho drives both co-innovation of emerging AI capabilities and value realization of Kensho's AI products, both internally within S&P Global (e.g., Market Intelligence, Ratings) and externally with top financial institutions and AI partners globally.

About The Role

This role sits at the intersection of AI partnership development and strategic customer success, with roughly equal time across both motions. You will shape and execute our global AI partnerships agenda - from initial qualification through operational launch - while simultaneously owning the success of a focused portfolio of strategic accounts worldwide, helping them unlock full value across our API, enterprise products, and developer tooling.

This is a builder's role for self-initiators. You will operate with significant autonomy, define playbooks that don't yet exist, and carry real commercial responsibility across both pillars.

At Kensho, we believe in flexibility-first, and give our employees the opportunity to work from where they feel most productive and engaged (must be in the United States). We also value in-person collaboration, so there may be times when travel to one of our Kensho hubs (e.g., Cambridge, MA or NYC) will be required for team meetings or company events. ~25% travel will be required for this role.

Kensho states that the anticipated base salary range for the position is 130-170k. In addition, this role is eligible for an annual incentive bonus and equity plans. At Kensho, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
What You'll Do:

  • Execute Kensho and S&P Global's AI partnerships agenda. Develop deep relationship with our established partners and identify new impactful opportunities, ensuring Kensho is on the front seat of latest technology release across AI Ecosystem

  • Serve as the day-to-day owner to maintain relationships with existing partners and identify growth opportunities - develop partnership debriefs, run cadenced reviews, coordinate with Kensho and S&P Global's marketing, product, and engineering team to execute joint release efforts with partners

  • Lead cross-functional coordination and alignment across sales, product, and legal to unblock deals, close partner commitments, and drive expansion

  • Own a portfolio of strategic clients, understand their AI strategy, business objectives, and organizational dynamics, and drive measurable adoption and expansion through Kensho's forward deployed engineering motion. Proactively identify levers to enable deal renewals for strategic clients

  • Enable conversion from trials and identify levers to accelerate time-to-value during the post-sale phase for strategic clients

  • Problem-solve issues with both internal teams and client teams as they arise from partnership or client engagements, partnering with key stakeholders to ensure projects executed within timeline

What You'll Need:

  • Experience with financial institutions, investment banking, etc.

  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills

  • Technical fluency to engage credibly with developers, PMs, and technical buyers on AI/ML concepts, APIs, and software implementation patterns

  • Track record of managing complex, senior-level relationships

  • Demonstrated ability to operate in ambiguous, fast-moving environments and build structure where none exists

  • Willingness to travel up to 25% for partnership and client needs

How to Really Get Our Attention:

  • Experience in Customer Success, Technical Account Management, Engagement management, Partner Management, or a hybrid role spanning both

  • Deep familiarity with the AI landscape - direct experience working with or for companies across the AI technology stack

  • Experience driving commercial outcomes across both consumption-based and seat-based business models

  • Comfort operating across business cultures; ability to build credibility with stakeholders in diverse markets

  • A bias toward execution - energized by shipping and owning outcomes

At Kensho, we pride ourselves on providing top-of-market benefits, including:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance

  • 100% company paid premiums

  • Unlimited Paid Time Off

  • 26 weeks of 100% paid Parental Leave (paternity and maternity)

  • 401(k) plan with 6% employer matching

  • Generous company matching on donations to non-profit charities

  • Up to $20,000 tuition assistance toward degree programs, plus up to $4,000/year for ongoing professional education such as industry conferences

  • Plentiful snacks, drinks, and regularly catered lunches

  • Dog-friendly office (CAM office)

  • Bike sharing program memberships

  • Compassion leave and elder care leave

  • Mentoring and additional learning opportunities

  • Opportunity to expand professional network and participate in conferences and events
