Job description

About the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan:

The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of individuals affected by kidney disease. NKFM focuses on kidney health education, prevention, and research while offering support to kidney patients and their families. We are committed to increasing public awareness, promoting healthy living, and advancing medical research related to kidney disease.

Overview

Instruct an older adult low impact physical activity curriculum (EnhanceFitness) that includes flexibility, aerobics, strength and balance training. Training in the specific curriculum is provided. Classes are held three times per week, in a virtual or in person setting. In person class session is one (1) hour plus two hours of administrative tasks and virtual is one hour of instruction and one hour of administrative tasks.

Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Organize class space.
  • Demonstrate, explain, and lead the proper exercise activities.
  • Provide pertinent information about precautions and safety of exercising, especially during strength training.
  • Adapt exercises for the level of strength or frailty of each participant.
  • Participate in training opportunities provided by the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.
  • Complete administrative record keeping functions, including health history forms, physician notification letters, class roster and attendance report, and evaluations.
  • Instruct participants in importance and relevance of fitness testing, and conduct fitness tests per prescribed protocols.
  • For in person classes, store all equipment and return room to its original arrangement.
  • Qualifications:
  • Current nationally recognized fitness instructor certification.
  • Current CPR/AED certification.
  • Successful completion of the EnhanceFitness New Instructor Training.
  • Successful completion of HIPAA training
  • If teaching in person, the ability to deliver in person classes in at least one of the following counties: Wayne, Oakland and/or Washtenaw.
  • Skills and Experience (preferred, not required)

  • Two years of handson experience delivering physical activity classes or an academic background in exercise science, physical education, or a related health field.
  • Knowledge of chronic diseases, special needs, and issues pertaining to older adults.
  • Basic motivational and/or coaching techniques.
