What does a NASA software engineer do when working remotely?

A NASA Software Engineer working remotely designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications that support NASA missions and projects. This can include building code for spacecraft operations, data analysis, simulations, or mission control systems. Remote engineers collaborate with interdisciplinary teams using online tools to track progress, resolve issues, and ensure software reliability and security. They follow strict coding standards and documentation protocols to meet NASA's high-quality requirements. Communication and proactive problem-solving are essential skills for remote software engineers at NASA.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a NASA software engineer working remotely?

To thrive as a NASA Software Engineer in a remote setting, you need strong programming skills (such as Python, C++, or Java), a solid understanding of computer science principles, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with specialized software development tools, version control systems like Git, and experience with NASA's or aerospace industry-specific platforms are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and effective communication are critical soft skills for collaborating across dispersed teams. These competencies ensure the delivery of high-quality, reliable software solutions essential for NASA's complex and mission-critical projects.

About the Role

We're looking for a Software Engineer who enjoys building great software, learning quickly, and making a meaningful impact on a small, collaborative engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a solid foundation in AI-driven software development who wants more ownership, greater exposure to product decisions, and the chance to work alongside experienced engineering leaders in a fast-paced SaaS environment.

You'll partner closely with Product and Engineering to design, build, test, and ship high-quality software while helping solve real customer problems. As part of a lean engineering team, you'll have the opportunity to contribute across the stack and see your work make an immediate impact.

Our technology stack includes PHP/Laravel, React, Angular, MySQL, AWS, Claude Code, and Datadog. You don't need experience with every technology we use. We're looking for engineers with strong software fundamentals and a command of AI technologies who enjoy learning new technologies and contributing wherever they're needed.

You'll do well here if you enjoy solving challenging problems, moving quickly, taking ownership, and building practical solutions without unnecessary process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, development, testing, and deployment of features across our platform

  • Own projects from concept through production, including testing, deployment, monitoring, and post-release support

  • Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code while contributing to engineering best practices

  • Leverage AI development tools as part of your daily workflow

  • Participate in thoughtful code reviews and collaborate openly with teammates

  • Troubleshoot production issues, improve application performance, and enhance system reliability

  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Design, Operations, and Customer Success to build scalable solutions

  • Maintain a customer-first mindset when making technical decisions

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications

  • 3–6 years of professional software engineering experience

  • Experience building modern web applications using one or more backend frameworks such as Laravel, Node.js, or similar

  • Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks such as React

  • Experience integrating AI capabilities into customer-facing SaaS products in a production environment

  • A depth of knowledge of AI-assisted development and how AI can improve engineering workflows

  • Strong understanding of relational databases and modern web application architecture

  • Demonstrated ownership and accountability, with the ability to independently drive projects and proactively solve problems

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud

  • Familiarity with modern deployment practices, CI/CD pipelines, containerization, or observability tools is a plus

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field preferred, or equivalent practical experience

You'll Thrive Here If You...

  • Enjoy learning new technologies and tackling new challenges

  • Like working on a small team where your ideas matter

  • Take ownership and follow projects through to completion

  • Are collaborative, curious, and open to feedback

  • Want to build software that customers rely on every day

  • Are excited about using AI to become a more effective engineer

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary of $120,000–$165,000 depending on experience, plus annual bonus opportunity

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance

  • 401(k)

  • Very generous PTO

  • Fully remote within the United States

  • Opportunity to work directly with Engineering leadership and influence a growing platform

  • Small, collaborative, low-ego engineering team with meaningful ownership and visibility

  • Professional development and career growth opportunities

  • Mission-driven work that helps improve community safety across the country
