Are you curious and a strategic thinker that loves to use analytics to support public policy positions? Do you enjoy working in a collaborative, team-driven environment to accomplish the organization’s goals? If so, the Vice President, Director of Research and Analytics position is for you. This important role serves as the Reinsurance Association of America’s (RAA) senior analytical resource, integrating quantitative analysis, insurance financial reporting, capital analysis and public policy research to support RAA advocacy, member services and thought leadership. This role: leads a team in developing factually-supported arguments in coordination with RAA senior staff and committees, utilizing interactive data visualizations, GIS mapping tools and other analytical tools. This role will advocate externally on behalf of the RAA. This position also is responsible for RAA’s data resources, including statistical publications, databases, models and analytical tools and for developing analytical frameworks that evaluate the financial, accounting, capital and regulatory implications of emerging issues affecting the (re)insurance industry.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following essential functions require strong research and analytical skills, knowledge of the reinsurance industry’s marketplace, products and issues various relevant data sources, including the NAIC Annual Statements/Blanks.
- Research and analyze public and private sector data to quantify the impact of state and federal legislative and regulatory proposals that impact the (re)insurance industry.
- Analyze insurer and reinsurer financial statements prepared under U.S. GAAP and Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), including the NAIC Annual Statement (Blanks), to assess the financial, accounting, capital and public policy implications of legislative, regulatory and accounting proposals.
- Develop custom reports and analyses to make appropriate recommendations in furtherance of the association’s legislative and public policy initiatives, and in support of the Financial Services, Law, Federal Affairs, State Relations and Finance and Administration Departments.
- Develop analytical models and decision-support tools related to RAA policy objectives, including flood, cyber, terrorism, insurer solvency, capital adequacy and financial strength, including Risk-Based Capital (RBC), rating agency capital models, statutory accounting and emerging domestic and international capital frameworks.
- Develop, implement, and oversee issue specific, quantitative information-based decision-making tools (including both macro and micro-simulation deterministic models) to support RAA’s public policy development and advocacy on state and federal legislation and regulation.
- Engage with RAA members and senior staff, regulators, rating agencies, industry organizations and other stakeholders in the development of public policy positions by grounding public policy positions in data as well as translating complex financial, accounting and capital issues into practical policy recommendations on a variety of issues impacting the (re)insurance industry...
- Develop utilize, and interpret interactive analytics, geospatial mapping, and data visualizations that communicate the association’s public policy positions and insights to stakeholders and provide decision-ready insights for senior executives, regulators and member companies.
- Advocate before executive, legislative, regulatory and other policy makers on priority issues, in coordination with RAA senior staff and committees, utilizing interactive data visualizations and GIS mapping tools as indicated. Evaluate emerging risks, market trends and regulatory developments through innovative analytical techniques and identify opportunities for original research that strengthens the Association's public policy agenda.
- Responsible for RAA’s data resources, including statistical publications, databases, models, and analytical tools.
- Manage and mentor a team to accomplish these goals.

Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S) in insurance & risk management or a quantitative field (e.g. data science, analytics, finance, economics, statistics, information systems, and applied math). CPA, CFA, actuarial credential or advanced degree is desirable but not required.
- 7 - 10 years of documented related experience and/or training in data analytics (of which at least 2 years of experience preparing, examining, auditing or analyzing statutory based financial statements and/or the NAIC Annual Statement for property casualty insurers).
- Demonstrated knowledge of the reinsurance marketplace, U.S. GAAP, Statutory Accounting Principles, NAIC Annual Statement reporting (Blanks), insurer financial reporting, insurance regulation and solvency frameworks. Working knowledge of insurer capital frameworks including NAIC Risk-Based Capital (RBC), S&P Global Ratings capital adequacy methodology and AM Best's BCAR framework. Familiarity with group capital concepts and international solvency frameworks is desirable.
- Professional designation in reinsurance or related work and/or education in the (re)insurance sector, and experience in public policy advocacy/lobbying is desirable.
- Experience creating and/or using geospatial products and systems is desirable.
- A demonstrated ability to interpret scientific and technical information and data and effectively communicate interactive, quantitative information and data visualizations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Tableau.
- Knowledge of third-party insurance statutory, GAAP, and IFRS financials databases such as S&P Capital IQ Pro AM Best, NAIC financial databases and other industry analytical resources.
- Experience working with large public and/or open-source datasets is required.
- Demonstrated skills in business process analysis, data architecture, data governance, data transformation and analytics development in complex relational and multidimensional environments. Experience evaluating and applying emerging analytical technologies, including artificial intelligence and advanced analytics, to improve research quality, operational efficiency and policy analysis is preferred.
- Excellent writing, proofreading, editing, and grammar skills.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position is responsible for supervising, mentoring, and training the Research & Analytics Department staff.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Position can be remote. The employee must be available during the “core” work hours of 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and must work 32 hours each week to maintain full-time status. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
