Job description

Merriam Music is a multi-location, family-owned business based in Oakville, Ontario. The business operates two primary sales divisions, one focused on music education, one on piano retail. In both categories, Merriam is considered a leader in terms of market share, marketing effectiveness, and quality of product. The company is focused on growth in all divisions and seeking talented and driven individuals who are seeking employment in an accountable, organized, highly supportive, and very goal-oriented work culture.

The candidate we're seeking is best described as someone who:

  • Has a Bachelor Degree in Music (completed or in progress), with at least 1 year of teaching experience
  • Can perform at a high level with a good knowledge of written theory
  • Can translate complex musical concepts to easy and accessible instruction for students
  • Has proven supportive administrative task completion
  • Has excellent verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in both orientation training and ongoing training in order to understand the full Merriam School of Music offering (lessons, programs, policies and basic instruments) to maximize the experience of students and families.
  • Teach lessons in-person and on-site in a fun, creative and organized way, using resources and referencing provided long-term plans to create individual class/lesson plans.
  • Engage with parents from time to time to identify any potential barriers to student progress and ensure they are feeling heard and supported in the process of resolution.
  • Complete administrative duties on time, including responding to emails within a 24-hour window, completing all student information, streaming notes, attendance etc. as required.
  • Translate customer questions, issues and concerns into positive experiences and resolutions for customers. Proactively follow up with customers if any student progress issues are identified through lessons in order to address them immediately.
  • Adapt approach to lesson delivery to address issues and support student success and retention.
