Description
Build a Career That Inspires People Through Music
For nearly 80 years, Heid Music has helped people discover, learn, create, and share music. As a third-generation, family-owned and musician-operated company, we proudly serve students, educators, schools, performers, families, and music enthusiasts throughout Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
We are more than a music store. We are a trusted music resource, community partner, and lifelong guide for musicians at every stage of their journey. Each day brings another opportunity to help someone experience connection, confidence, and joy through music.
If you enjoy developing people, building relationships, driving business performance, and creating outstanding customer experiences, we would love to meet you.
The Opportunity
As Store Manager of Heid Music Madison, you will lead the people, performance, and day-to-day operations of a store serving one of Wisconsin's most vibrant music, education, and arts communities.
You will coach and develop a customer-focused team, establish performance expectations, oversee store operations, and build relationships throughout the greater Madison area. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone comfortable moving between team coaching, business planning, customer engagement, community outreach, and operational decision-making.
You will work closely with sales specialists, repair professionals, school services, and company leadership to connect customers with the instruments, services, and resources that support their musical goals.
No two days are the same. One will include reviewing sales performance, coaching a team member, improving merchandising, and assisting with an important customer need. The next may involve connecting with a local educator, supporting a community event, planning a store initiative, or identifying new growth opportunities.
Your Impact
As Store Manager, you will:
  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team committed to delivering Bravo Service.
  • Establish goals, communicate expectations, and create accountability for individual and store performance.
  • Drive sustainable sales growth through active leadership, customer engagement, thoughtful planning, and consistent execution.
  • Create a positive and engaging store culture aligned with Heid Music's mission and Core Values.
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and retain team members who contribute to the success of the store.
  • Partner with department specialists to maximize opportunities across band and orchestra, piano, guitars and folk instruments, print music, rentals, repairs, lessons, and accessories.
  • Build relationships with area schools, music educators, community organizations, performers, and music enthusiasts.
  • Lead by example through personalized service, consultative selling, and effective problem resolution.
  • Monitor sales, profitability, inventory, staffing, and other business metrics, using those insights to develop and carry out action plans.
  • Oversee scheduling, merchandising, inventory practices, store presentation, and operational processes.
  • Support company promotions, school music programs, special events, and community outreach.
  • Foster collaboration across departments while creating a culture of accountability, communication, and continuous improvement.

Who Thrives Here
This opportunity is well suited for a leader who enjoys developing people, building community relationships, achieving meaningful goals, and staying actively involved in the customer experience.
We are looking for someone with:
  • Previous leadership experience in retail, sales, customer service, or another customer-focused business environment.
  • Strong coaching, communication, and team-development skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to drive results while maintaining a people-focused leadership approach.
  • Experience setting expectations, managing performance, and balancing multiple priorities.
  • Confidence using business metrics to evaluate performance and guide decisions.
  • Strong organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • A commitment to creating personalized and memorable customer experiences.
  • An appreciation for music, music education, or the performing arts.

Experience in music retail, specialty retail, or another consultative sales environment is preferred. Musical knowledge is valuable, but you do not need to be a professional musician. What matters most is your ability to lead people, build relationships, learn the business, and help your team succeed.
Schedule and Compensation
This full-time leadership position includes some evenings, Saturdays, and occasional community events. These are often some of our most valuable opportunities to connect with customers and musicians throughout the Madison community.
We offer:
  • Competitive salary with commission & bonus opportunities.
  • Team member merchandise discount
  • Health, dental, vision and paid time off benefits for eligible full-time team members
  • Life insurance
  • 401(k) opportunities

Training and Professional Growth
At Heid Music, we invest in our people. You will receive:
  • Ongoing leadership development and coaching
  • Comprehensive training in company operations, products, services, and Bravo Service standards
  • Opportunities to collaborate with experienced leaders throughout the organization, music products industry and community
  • Professional-development resources that support continued growth
  • Exposure to multiple areas of the business, helping you build a well-rounded leadership career

At Heid Music, our work is guided by our Core Values: Deliver Bravo Service, Communicate, Take Personal Ownership, Be a Part of the Solution, Work as a Team, Develop Personally & Professionally, and Strive Toward Profits & Growth.
