Music Video information

What are music videos?

Music videos are short films or video clips that integrate a song with imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. They typically feature the artist or band performing the song, sometimes combined with storytelling, choreography, or visual effects to enhance the song's message or appeal. Music videos are widely used to promote new singles or albums and are commonly shared on platforms like YouTube, MTV, and social media. They have become an essential part of the music industry, helping artists reach broader audiences and express their creativity.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working on music video productions, and how can new team members prepare for them?

Working on music video productions often involves tight deadlines, fast-paced environments, and the need to adapt quickly to creative changes. New team members should be prepared for long hours, last-minute adjustments to the script or visuals, and the necessity of effective communication with directors, artists, and crew. Building flexibility, strong organizational skills, and a collaborative attitude will help you thrive and contribute positively to the project’s success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a music video director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Music Video Director, you need a strong background in visual storytelling, video production, and a good understanding of music and rhythm, often supported by a degree in film, media, or a related field. Proficiency with video editing software (such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro), camera equipment, and lighting systems is essential. Creativity, leadership, and strong communication skills set standout directors apart by enabling them to collaborate effectively with artists and production teams. These skills ensure the creation of compelling, high-quality music videos that engage audiences and fulfill the artist's vision.

The Disney Music Group (DMG) is the music hub for The Walt Disney Company (TWDC), encompassing all aspects of music commercialization and marketing: recorded music (Walt Disney Records and Hollywood Records), Disney Music Publishing, and Disney Concerts. DMG distributes music both physically and digitally and also licenses music throughout the world in various forms of media including television, print, gaming, and consumer products.

Role Overview:

The Music Research team works closely with production partners across The Walt Disney Company's iconic brands on music cue sheets for productions presented by our world-class entertainment studios. Our goal is to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of music reporting to performing rights organizations and interested parties worldwide. By doing so, the team supports royalty distributions, publishing revenue, and helps maintain compliance with industry reporting requirements.

  • Review quarterly promo reports and create music video cue sheets to submit to the Performing Rights Organizations (PROs).
  • Review, edit, and approve domestic and international cue sheets as assigned.
  • Review, edit, and approve Parks & Resorts cue sheets.
  • Research songs, music rights, and interested party information to support cue sheet preparation and reporting.
  • Locate and provide cue sheets for owned, acquired, and licensed content, supporting a high volume of requests from internal teams, PROs, and external interested parties.
  • Coordinate the transfer and retrieval of assets from physical archive storage.
  • Handle various administrative and operational tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of professional experience
  • College degree and/or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • General music industry knowledge (music publishing, licensing, and performing rights).
  • Familiarity with cue sheets and music reporting workflows preferred.
  • Soundmouse, RapidCue, or other automated cue sheet program experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills.
  • Comfortable working with technology and able to learn new systems, databases, and workflows quickly.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Highly organized with sharp attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external partners.
  • Resourceful problem-solver with the ability to resolve routine issues and seek guidance or escalate as needed.
  • Ability to manage assigned priorities and deadlines while maintaining accuracy.
  • Must be available to work onsite 4 days per week (Monday-Thursday). Fridays are remote with flexibility to work onsite as needed.

The hiring range for this position in Burbank, CA is $51,000 to $66,000 per year based on a 40 hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
