Department Summary

The College of Music, at the University of North Texas, is searching for a Piano Repair Technician. This position is specific to providing piano technical services in the College of Music. Assist in managing the piano technical services program for the College of Music.

Position Overview

Position is specific to providing piano technical services in the College of Music. Assist in managing the piano technical services program for the College of Music, focusing on practice room pianos for student use, assists in repairing and rebuilding pianos college purposes.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and four years of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of related tools, equipment, materials, and techniques of musical instrument repair. Ability to read and interpret complex drawings, charts, and designs. Ability to work from ideas and to draw own sketches and designs. Ability to locate and identify malfunctions in equipment. Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment. Ability to design, troubleshoot, and maintain complex equipment. Ability to operate standard tools and equipment. Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelors in Music. May be a registered member of the Piano Technicians Guild or has any other certifications in the field.

Job Duties

  • Tunes, regulates and voices pianos for the College of Music students in practice rooms, classrooms, studios and labs and voice concert pianos for student performances and other student use. 
  • Assist in repairing and rebuilding pianos for use in practice rooms, classrooms, studios, concert halls and labs. 
  • Assist in providing piano resource and technical information to students. 
  • Assist in the administration of the Piano Technical Services program at the College of Music. 
  • Assist in determining piano technical service standards for student use instruments and establish priorities utilizing available resources. 
  • Assist in identifying vendors who provide piano related services to the College. 
  • Assist in supervising additional contract piano technicians and student workers. 
  • Assist in maintaining student piano inventory lists and piano depreciation schedules. 
  • Assist in scheduling all piano technical service work in coordination with the Manager of Piano Technical Services, the Building Manager and the Chair of Division of Keyboard Studies. 
  • Assist in maintaining service records for the College of Music piano inventory. 
  • Makes recommendations to the Manager of Piano Technical Services regarding student pianos and piano technical services.

  • Lifting and Moving objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Moving self in various positions to perform tasks in tight and confined spaces.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
  • Lifting and Moving objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Operating machinery and/or power tools.
  • Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
