Summary:
The Museum Assistant is responsible for visitor relations as guests, students, faculty and staff visit the campus museums. The successful candidate will primarily interact with guests visiting the Werner Wildlife Museum by providing tours, preparing and implementing educational programs for groups, assisting with the organization and operation of open houses and special events, coordinating a monthly speaker series, and completing general office duties associated with the museums.
Responsibilities:
The Museum Assistant will be familiar with the wildlife exhibits in the Werner Wildlife Museum. The employee will greet drop-in visitors as well as coordinate tours with school groups and other visitors. The Museum Assistant will need to develop educational materials and activities for groups scheduled to visit the museum. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining records of museum visitation and tour information.
Essential Duties
- Communicate effectively with guests about the exhibits in the Werner Wildlife Museum.
- Coordinate and provide tours for various groups.
- Maintain records of tours and visitors.
- Assist with the maintenance and conservation of the exhibits as needed.
- Supervise work study students, and volunteers as appropriate.
- Develop educational programs throughout the academic calendar.
- Assist with the organization and implementation of open houses and special events throughout the year.
- Assist the Director of Museums with planning and implementing special projects at the museum.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Casper College Museum Programs
- Knowledge of wildlife, wildlife habitat and ecosystems, and educational methods
- Previous experience with office technology
- Previous experience supervising employees and the ability to coordinate schedules and information with other staff members
- Ability to communicate effectively and work with a wide variety of individuals (students, faculty, community, etc.)
- Ability to manage time effectively and work in an isolated environment where the employee may be the only staff member present.
Desired Qualifications:
- Associate's Degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate degree area; wildlife biology or related educational field preferred
- High level of communication ability
- Experience working with and managing groups of people, especially children
- Experience developing educational programs and activities
Supplemental Information
Work Environment:
Work is performed indoors in an office or museum environment. Work may cause exposure to atmospheric conditions such as dirt, dust, and other potential allergens associated with taxidermy specimens. Work is usually performed during normal operating hours; however, occasional early morning, evening, and weekend work may be required. Employee will work frequently with students, faculty, staff, volunteers, community members and student work-study employees.
Physical Demands:
Employee must be able to stand for long periods of time, climb up and down stairs, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use a computer, feel, and reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Frequent lifting/moving of up to 40 pounds and moving more with or without assistance.
