Role Description

The On-Call Preparator is an on-call, on-site role based in Bonita, CA, responsible for supporting the installation, deinstallation, and maintenance of museum exhibitions. Day-to-day tasks include handling, mounting, and arranging artworks and artifacts, assisting with lighting, signage, and display construction, and ensuring that exhibition spaces are clean, safe, and visually consistent. The role involves following curatorial and design plans, coordinating with museum staff on schedules and logistics, and maintaining proper documentation of object movement and installation details. The On-Call Preparator also helps monitor environmental and safety conditions, adheres to museum standards for collections care, and provides occasional support for public programs and special events related to exhibitions.

Qualifications

  • Experience with art handling, object mounting, and exhibition installation in a museum, gallery, or similar setting.
  • Basic knowledge of tools, hardware, and construction methods used for building displays, pedestals, and temporary walls.
  • Understanding of collections care practices, including safe handling, storage, and environmental considerations for artworks and artifacts.
  • Strong attention to detail, spatial awareness, and ability to follow curatorial and design specifications accurately.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, climbing ladders, and standing for extended periods, in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work respectfully with curators, educators, and operations staff.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and respond to on-call scheduling needs.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; relevant coursework or training in museum studies, fine arts, or exhibition design is preferred.
  • Prior experience in a museum, cultural center, gallery, or related environment is highly beneficial.
