Description
The Department of Art at in the College of Liberal Arts is seeking a dynamic individual for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Museum and Curatorial Studies. The successful candidate will be instrumental in shaping the curatorial direction of the program, teaching specialized courses, and fostering collaborations with museums and cultural institutions.
Examples of Duties
  • Teach undergraduate courses with a focus on curatorial practices, including but not limited to a curatorial theory seminar, and contemporary curatorial strategies.
  • Academic mentoring of students, guiding them in curatorial projects and research.
  • Lead and participate in curatorial projects, exhibitions, and publishing related to the field.
  • Engage in university, professional, and community service, including collaborations with local museums, galleries, and cultural institutions in a curatorial capacity.
  • Assist in the management of the Department of Art Gallery and curation of exhibitions. Gallery duties and responsibilities will be balanced with the teaching expectations of a 3/3 course load for full time faculty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
  • A Masters of Fine Arts degree with a curatorial focus, a Doctorate, or ABD in Art History, Museum Studies, Curatorial Studies or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience with curatorial roles in museums, galleries, or cultural institutions.
  • Commitment to excellence in research, teaching, student mentoring, and service that aligns with the mission and vision of Jackson State University and the Department of Art.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Able to develop a strong network within the curatorial and museum community.
  • Deep understanding of contemporary curatorial practices.
  • Experience teaching courses related to museum studies with an emphasis on curatorial practices.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring emerging curators.
