English as a New Language (ENL) TeacherPosition Summary

The English as a New Language (ENL) Teacher provides instruction and support to multilingual learners to help them develop English language proficiency while achieving academic success across content areas. The ENL Teacher creates a supportive, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment that promotes language development, confidence, and student achievement.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide direct English language instruction to students identified as English Language Learners (ELLs)/Multilingual Learners (MLLs) based on their individual language needs and proficiency levels.
  • Develop and implement engaging lessons that support listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to support language development and ensure access to grade-level curriculum.
  • Utilize research-based instructional strategies and differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Assess student progress using formal and informal assessments and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, language proficiency levels, and required documentation.
  • Support students in developing academic vocabulary and skills necessary for success across subject areas.
  • Incorporate students’ cultural backgrounds and experiences into instruction to create an inclusive classroom environment.
  • Participate in parent/guardian communication and provide support to families of multilingual learners as needed.
  • Collaborate with school staff, administrators, and support personnel to develop strategies that promote student growth and achievement.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities related to language acquisition, instructional practices, and student support.
Qualifications
  • Valid New York State Teaching Certification in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL/ENL) or eligibility for certification.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition theory, ENL instructional strategies, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Experience working with multilingual learners preferred.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
