What is the difference between Multibody Dynamics Adams vs Multibody Simulation Engineer?

AspectMultibody Dynamics AdamsMultibody Simulation Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, certification in Adams or similar softwareEngineering degree, experience with multibody simulation tools
Work EnvironmentSoftware development, simulation analysis, automotive/aerospace industriesDesign validation, testing, simulation modeling in engineering teams
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, roboticsAutomotive, manufacturing, product design

Multibody Dynamics Adams focuses on developing and applying Adams software for multibody system simulation, primarily in software engineering roles. In contrast, a Multibody Simulation Engineer uses such tools for practical system analysis and design validation. Both roles require engineering backgrounds, but Adams specialists often work in software development, while simulation engineers focus on applying the software to solve engineering problems.

What is a Multibody Dynamics Adams engineer?

A Multibody Dynamics Adams engineer is a specialist who uses the MSC Adams software to simulate and analyze the movement and interaction of interconnected bodies in mechanical systems. They model complex assemblies such as vehicles, machinery, or robotics to predict their dynamic behavior under various conditions. Their work helps improve product design by identifying potential issues early, optimizing performance, and reducing the need for physical prototypes. These engineers often collaborate with design, testing, and manufacturing teams to ensure products meet functional and safety requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Multibody Dynamics Adams Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Multibody Dynamics Adams Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, physics, and strong analytical skills, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in using MSC Adams software for modeling, simulating, and analyzing mechanical systems, along with familiarity with CAD tools and possibly MATLAB, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret simulation results and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately predicting system behavior, optimizing designs, and ensuring robust product performance in engineering projects.

What are common challenges faced when working with Multibody Dynamics (Adams) software in engineering projects?

A frequent challenge for engineers using Multibody Dynamics (Adams) software is accurately modeling complex mechanical systems while balancing simulation fidelity and computational efficiency. It can also be difficult to interpret simulation results and troubleshoot convergence issues, especially when dealing with nonlinear contacts, flexible bodies, or advanced control systems. Collaboration with design, testing, and controls teams is essential, as integrating models with real-world data often requires clear communication and iterative validation. Staying updated with the latest software features and best practices can help streamline workflows and enhance simulation accuracy.

Job description

About Rivian
Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.
As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary
Are you a Multibody Dynamics Engineer with a passion for problem-solving and a drive to innovate? Join our Durability Loads team and play a pivotal role in engineering the next generation of adventurous and resilient vehicles. You'll be instrumental in generating comprehensive vehicle loads, utilizing advanced
suspension and full-vehicle simulation methods. Your expertise will directly impact the robustness of our designs by providing critical load data to stakeholder teams.
We're looking for a highly motivated individual with a can-do attitude, exceptional problem- solving abilities, and strong organizational and time management skills. If you're ready to collaborate with an industry-leading team dedicated to pushing the boundaries of vehicle durability, we want to hear from you.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and Optimize Models: Build, manage, and leverage high-fidelity multibody dynamics (MBD) models for suspension, EV powertrain and full-vehicle systems.
  • Validate and Refine Simulations: Assist in validating and refining MBD models for accurate vehicle dynamics behavior, correlating them with K&C test data.
  • Support Data Correlation: Contribute to the correlation process between full-vehicle virtual MBD and physical RLDA test data for durability surfaces, guided by senior engineers.
  • Collaborate on Testing: Work with the vehicle durability testing team to ensure appropriate instrumentation for RLDA correlation and assist in reviewing test data.
  • Drive Cross-Functional Alignment: Partner with chassis and vehicle dynamics teams to ensure a coordinated approach to model building and accurate load generation.
  • Generate Durability Loads: Assist in generating comprehensive durability loads throughout the vehicle at individual joints using MBD simulations.
  • Communicate Insights: Create clear and informative reports to effectively communicate simulation results to stakeholder teams.
  • Foster Product Development: Collaborate with other functional groups (e.g., chassis & body design, vehicle dynamics, packaging, architecture) to ensure synchronized product development and validation.
  • Document & Innovate: Create and maintain simulation methods documentation to enhance team knowledge and efficiency.
  • Grow Your Expertise: Participate in training sessions and workshops to continuously enhance your technical skills and understanding of MBD simulation techniques and durability, actively seeking guidance from senior team members.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (or equivalent) with at least 1 year of experience in automotive product development.
  • Strong understanding of automotive system fundamentals.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Experience with MSC ADAMS/Car (preferred).
  • Proficiency in Python, C/C++ & MATLAB scripting (preferred).
  • Preferred:
    • FSAE/Baja SAE experience.
    • Experience generating flex bodies using CAE tools.
    • Experience with Simpack, Carmaker & nCode.
    • Working knowledge of FEA Analysis toolsets (e.g., ABAQUS, Nastran, Optistruct, LSDyna).
    • Experience with Atlassian tools (e.g., JAMA, JIRA).
