Campus Safety Officer - (Multi-shift Security Position)

Job Title: Campus SafetyOfficer - (Multi-shift Security Position)
Department: Campus Safety
Reports to: Director of CampusSafety
Status: Full-Time, Benefit Eligible
Location: Lisle Campus
Rate: $20.00 hourly
Position Summary: This position will be responsible for providing safety, security andprotection of people, buildings and/or property within the University. You will be greeting incoming guests to theCampus Safety Department, answering phone calls, completing reports, monitoringradio's and communicating via the radio to other officers on campus. You willbe responsible for entering data into our reporting system, monitoring alarmand weather tracking systems, operate the Student I.D. computer system, conducttraffic control, parking enforcement, safety patrols, answering calls forservice and properly documenting them. You are expected to report for work fitfor duty, which means being able to perform your job in a safe, appropriate andeffective manner.
The CSO must be available for Overtime on weekends and opposite shifts onan "as needed" basis (a combination of 8 hour and 12-hour shifts). The CSO willbe expected to become certified/trained in CPR, First Aid and Narcan.
Essential Job Responsibilities: Theessential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustration ofthe various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specificstatements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work issimilar, related, or a logical assignment to theposition.
1. The CSO works under the general supervision ofan Assistant or Associate Director. Is familiar with the work routine and properpolicy and procedures within the department and uses initiative in carrying outrecurring assignments. Refers to supervisor for clarification, interpretation,and direction for new assignments; reviews work to remain aware of progress,work methods, and technical accuracy.
2. Provide security to the UniversityCommunity by enforcing University Policies, securing assigned buildings andfrequent campus patrols. Investigate any observed or reported suspiciousactivity. Be approachable and responsive to requests. Provide basicinformation and directions to students, faculty, staff, and guests of theUniversity. Monitor and provide guidance to student workers to ensurethey are successful.
3. Develop and demonstrate amulticultural awareness, cultivating an inclusive, diverse, and respectfulUniversity Community. When interacting with staff, faculty, students, andguests of the University demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior. Engage ineducational opportunities and required training to increase awareness.
4. Provide safety escorts to students,faculty, staff, and guests when requested. Actively patrol campus on foot,bicycle, golf cart or vehicle. Assist students, faculty, and staff with accessto buildings or residence hall rooms as needed and approved.
5. Maintain key control and access tosecure or restricted areas. Monitor key card access to buildings oncampus. Attend campus safety related training courses, classes andseminars as needed. Provide safety presentations when requested byfaculty or staff. Other investigative or special projects assigned by theDirector of Campus Safety. Provide vehicle jumpstarts or unlocks tocommunity members. Provide traffic control at events on campus or duringemergencies.
6. Respond to campus incidents such asburglar/panic alarms, fire alarms, trouble alarms, disputes between students,violations of University Policy, medical and other emergencies. In timesof medical emergencies provide emergency first aid or CPR where appropriate andassist in the transportation of persons when necessary. Coordinate withLisle Police and Lisle/Woodridge Fire Department, Residence Life in respondingto emergencies. Responsible for activating the Universities emergencybroadcast system for weather and active threat events.
7. Violations of Code of Conduct will bepromptly, accurately, and thoroughly documented. Complete all necessaryforms, including tickets and reports, provide accurate information of involvedpersons and witnesses. Enforce University parking rules and regulationsand issue campus citations when necessary. Complete a daily summaryat the end of your shift.
Other Functions:
1. Maintain a positive working relationship withcampus personnel and local first responders.
2. Clean and fuel department vehicles.
3. Annual involvement in the development andimplementation of programs designed to interact with students.
Required Qualifications:
Education: High School Graduate/GEDRequired, Bachelor's Degree Preferred
Experience: Customer service experiencepreferred. Law enforcement experience preferred. Higher Educationexperiencepreferred.
Specific Skills: Ability to speak clearly andbe understood via radio and phone communication. Ability to read, understandand apply both written and verbal directives. Normal hearing, due to the heavyvolume of telephone and radio communication, audible alarms, and dutiesrequiring monitoring of police/fire/EMS radio traffic. Strong command of theEnglish language. Ability to maintain calm and professional demeanor duringstressful or critical situations. Ability to communicatedepartment/University policies and procedures in a professional manner. Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office products.Comfortable with technical equipment to include, radios, scanners, electronicaccess control, fire panels and PC based programs. Ability to work varyingshifts, as required to meet departmental requirements.
Specific Knowledge, Licenses,Certifications: YYes. Valid Illinois Driver's License. CPR/AED certification within the first 90days of employment.
Other Requirements: Must be 21 years of age or older to meet University driving requirements. Ability to pass pre-hire Human Performance Physical Evaluation.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to drive a vehicle for extended amountsof time without interruption (intervals up to 3-4 hours). Possess visual acuity. Good physical condition without any restrictionin the ability to walk, run, stand or climb multiple flights of stairs. Ability to sit for an extended amount of time(intervals more than 60 minutes). Ability to perform extended foot patrolsmultiple times during a shift (intervals more than 30 minutes). Ability to follow offenders on foot. Strong or power grasps of evidence and property. Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds (floorto waist, waist to floor, floor to chest); continuous transporting (pull) up to30 lbs.; lifting of items weighing from 11 to over 100 lbs. below and at waistlevel, either with or without assistance; transporting (Pull) items weighing 26- 50 lbs. for distances up to 50 yards without assistance; Working outdoors inall weather conditions. Be able to go from standing to kneeling on bothknees, lie down, get up to knees and stand up) Officer do not crawl often, moregetting down on knees and back to feet. Fast walking speed - following of suspect. 24/7 Operation, combination of 8 hour and12-hour shifts.

Supervisory Responsibility (if applicable): Yes. Supervise student workers that are on your shift.
Working Conditions: Outdoors in all weatherconditions. Some general office work.
Training: As a University employee you arerequired to complete all University-specific and/or OSHA related training tofulfill your job duties. Specific training will be conducted online or inperson. Employees must complete all trainings required by BenedictineUniversity.
