What is a multi engine pilot?

Multi engine pilots are licensed aviators trained and certified to operate aircraft equipped with more than one engine. They possess specialized knowledge and skills to handle the complexities of multi engine aircraft, such as managing engine failures, asymmetric thrust, and advanced systems. Multi engine pilots typically undergo additional training and testing beyond the requirements for single engine pilots. They are often employed in commercial aviation, corporate flight departments, and charter services where multi engine planes are commonly used.

What does a multi engine pilot do?

A multi-engine pilot is a pilot with credentials that allow them to operate an aircraft with more than one engine. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has a recommended syllabus for institutions offering this training. As a pilot with the multi-engine land (MEL) rating, you can fly larger planes, whether as a private or commercial operator. You must perform several duties before and after flights, including inspection of the airplane, flight plan submission, and maintenance of safe operation during flight. Federal regulations dictate the maximum amount of hours you can fly, but you typically work outside of the standard 9-to-5 weekday schedule.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a multi engine pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Multi Engine Pilot, you need advanced piloting skills, a thorough understanding of aerodynamics and aircraft systems, and a Multi-Engine rating on your pilot's license. Proficiency with avionics, flight management systems, and navigation tools is essential, along with familiarity with FAA regulations. Exceptional situational awareness, decision-making, and communication skills help pilots manage complex situations and coordinate with crew and air traffic control. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure flight safety, efficient aircraft operation, and successful mission outcomes in multi-engine environments.

What are some common challenges faced by multi engine pilots during flight operations?

Multi engine pilots often encounter challenges such as managing asymmetric thrust during engine failures, coordinating complex cockpit procedures, and staying proficient with emergency checklists. Operating larger, faster aircraft also requires strong situational awareness and communication skills, especially when working with co-pilots and air traffic control. Regular training and clear communication are essential for safely handling the increased workload and potential in-flight issues unique to multi engine operations.

What is the difference between Multi Engine Pilot vs Commercial Pilot?

AspectMulti Engine PilotCommercial Pilot
Required CertificationsMulti-Engine Rating, Commercial Pilot CertificateCommercial Pilot Certificate, often with Multi-Engine Rating
Work EnvironmentOperate multi-engine aircraft, often for charter, cargo, or corporate flightsPerform commercial flights, including passenger and cargo services
Employer & Industry UsageAirlines, charter companies, corporate flight departmentsAirlines, charter services, cargo carriers, flight schools

The Multi Engine Pilot certification is a specialized qualification that allows pilots to operate aircraft with more than one engine. While a Commercial Pilot license enables pilots to be paid for flying, a Multi Engine Pilot rating is often a requirement for commercial operations. Many pilots obtain both certifications to expand their career opportunities in the aviation industry.

Job description

What weโ€™re about

At Harrison.ai, weโ€™re redefining whatโ€™s possible in healthcare. Through our diagnostic AI solutions, weโ€™re building tools that support clinicians to deliver earlier, more accurate diagnoses and raise the standard of care for millions of patients worldwide.

Our mission is bold but simple: to scale global healthcare capacity and create a fairer, healthier world. By using AI as a co-pilot for clinicians, weโ€™re tackling one of healthcareโ€™s biggest challenges, the shortage of human expertise, and giving every patient the chance to access timely, high-quality care, no matter where they live.

Because while weโ€™re building cutting-edge AI, what weโ€™re really building is hopeโ€”that everyone can access the healthcare they deserve.

And weโ€™re just getting started.

About Your Role

This role supports both the Harrison.ai US business and Harrison.ai Services, the management services organisation that provides services to Frontier Radiology โ€” an independent, AI-first, physician-owned teleradiology practice. Harrison.ai Services is a core pillar of Harrison.ai's growth agenda and its first major build-out of US non-clinical service operations.

Reporting to the CFO, this role is the finance engine behind that build-out and the primary finance presence on the ground in the US, with day-to-day ownership of the function and a high degree of autonomy, while Group Finance in Australia provides governance and a clear view of the business. An outsourced provider handles today's transaction processing; the Finance Manager sets direction and builds the roadmap to bring that capability in-house.

This is a rare opportunity for a US finance professional to build a function largely from the ground up inside a category-defining, high-growth AI healthcare company with direct exposure to a novel RVU-based radiologist compensation model and a fast-scaling multi-state operation. For a finance leader who wants ownership, autonomy, and the chance to shape a growth region and with the support of the enterprise teams, this role offers exactly that.

What Youโ€™ll Do:

Payroll & Compensation

  • Own day-to-day payroll decisions for US employees in Rippling including new hires, terminations and compensation changes, directing and approving the outsourced providerโ€™s processing, and escalating policy-level or out-of-authority items to the Group team

  • Administer the RVU-based radiologist pay model and sign-on/retention/milestone bonus arrangements within Group-approved parameters and apply the worker-classification framework partnering with People & Culture and Legal on complex cases.

  • Manage multi-state withholding and benefits deductions within approved parameters.

Payroll Tax & Compliance

  • Direct multi-state payroll and employment-tax registrations, withholding, deposits and compliance calendars through the outsourced provider.

  • Review and approve payroll tax filings and information returns and resolve workers' compensation and state unemployment matters.

  • Maintain audit-ready documentation, and accelerate corporate tax, transfer pricing or entity-structuring matters to Group Tax.

Accounts Payable & Expenses

  • Approve US vendor invoicing and expense reimbursements within delegated authority, directing the provider's processing.

  • Manage vendor relationships, payment terms and flagged cost anomalies.

Reporting, Planning & Analysis

  • Lead US management reporting of actuals, variance to budget, and headcount and payroll-cost analysis and support input to global reporting.

  • Support budgeting and forecasting for payroll, contractor spend and operating expenditure and provide input to Group cash-flow forecasts on immediate-payment obligations.

  • Analyse cost-per-read/RVU economics to support the teleradiology service P&L.

Business Partnering

  • Act as the primary US finance point of contact, partnering with the Group team to ensure US activity is reflected accurately and on time in Group reporting and controls.

  • Partner with People & Culture on compensation events, and with service/squad leads and radiologist operations on staffing and cost drivers; provide local billing and revenue-recognition input for US contracts.

  • Support the data warehouse program and flag repetitive local finance tasks suited to AI-enabled automation.

External Relationships

  • Manage local US banking relationships and payment infrastructure.

  • Own the relationship with Harrison.ai's outsourced accounting, payroll and HR-compliance provider and set direction, approve deliverables, and build the roadmap to progressively insource.

What Youโ€™ll Bring:
  • 5+ years' experience in a US finance/accounting role, with hands-on payroll and payroll-tax compliance experience and the seniority to set policy and direct others' work.

  • Experience directing an outsourced/fractional finance or payroll provider (BPO, accounting firm, PEO) setting standards and reviewing output, not just executing personally.

  • Working knowledge of Rippling, or a comparable multi-state US payroll platform.

  • Familiarity with International Financial Accounting Standards (IFRS) would be well regarded

  • Comfort with variable/commission-based compensation, worker classification and US accounts payable and expense administration.

  • Strong Excel skills, high attention to detail, and a pragmatic, get-it-done approach suited to a scaling business. Confidence operating as the primary US-based finance decision-maker, while maintaining close, proactive communication with a Group finance function based overseas.

Nice to have skills and characteristics:

  • Healthcare, radiology, or physician/RVU-based compensation experience is highly regarded.

  • High-growth start-up/scale-up exposure is a plus.
