How much do mud logging engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for mud logging engineer in the United States is $95,796.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $81,000.00 and $116,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mud Logging Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mud Logging Engineer, you need a solid understanding of geology, drilling operations, and data interpretation, typically supported by a degree in geology, earth sciences, or a related field. Familiarity with mud logging units, gas detection systems, and specialized software like real-time data acquisition platforms is crucial. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are vital for ensuring accurate well data monitoring, safety, and informed drilling decisions in the oil and gas industry.

How does a Mud Logging Engineer typically interact with drilling teams and geologists during a project?

Mud Logging Engineers work closely with drilling teams and geologists to monitor real-time drilling data and ensure accurate interpretation of subsurface formations. They provide critical insights by analyzing drilling mud, cuttings, and gas readings, which helps inform operational decisions and maintain safety. Regular collaboration includes daily briefings, sharing detailed reports, and offering recommendations based on observed data, making strong communication skills essential for the role. This teamwork ensures the well's progress aligns with geological objectives and operational safety standards.

What is the difference between Mud Logging Engineer vs Drilling Engineer?

Common Search/ComparisonYesNo

The Mud Logging Engineer primarily focuses on analyzing formation data from drilling mud to identify hydrocarbon zones, working closely with geologists. In contrast, the Drilling Engineer plans and manages drilling operations. Both roles are essential in oil and gas exploration but differ in responsibilities, credentials, and work environment.

What are Mud Logging Engineers?

Mud Logging Engineers are professionals in the oil and gas industry who monitor and analyze drilling mud and rock cuttings during drilling operations. Their main role is to collect, examine, and interpret data from the well to provide real-time information about subsurface formations and detect hydrocarbons. They help ensure drilling safety by identifying potential hazards such as gas kicks and assist in optimizing drilling efficiency. Mud Logging Engineers work closely with geologists and drilling teams to guide decision-making throughout the drilling process.

Job description

Client- Haliburton

FPGA Design & Validation Engineer (Oil & Gas Systems)

Houston, TX, USA

Long term

As anย FPGAย Engineer in our Oil & Gas division, you will develop high-reliability digital systems for demanding environments, such asย downholeย drillingย tools,ย subseaย instrumentation, orย refineryย monitoringย systems. You will leverageย VHDLย to implement complexย data acquisitionย andย signal processingย algorithmsย that must operate under strict power and thermal constraints. A significant portion of this role involvesย hands-on lab validationย to ensure system integrity before deployment in remote or hazardous field locations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ruggedized Design:ย Implement synthesizableย VHDLย code optimized for low power consumption and high-temperature stability (e.g., surviving 150ยฐC+ for downhole applications).
  • High-Reliability Validation:ย Lead hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing in the lab to simulate harsh field conditions. Utilizeย oscilloscopes, logic analyzers (ILA/SignalTap), and thermal chambers to verify timing and functional reliability.
  • Protocol Management:ย Develop and test custom and industry-standard communication bridges (e.g.,ย Modbus,ย Ethernet/IP, CAN, or proprietary mud-pulseย telemetry).
  • Data Integrity:ย Design robust memory interfaces (DDR3/4) and error correction (ECC) for large-scale dataย loggingย during seismic orย pipe inspectionย missions.
  • Certification Support:ย Maintain detailed documentation of testing protocols and validation results to support safety and industry compliance standards.
  • Perform functional and timingย verificationย using respective simulators
  • Conduct post-synthesis and post-layoutย verification.

Work Experience

Requiredย Technical Skills

  • Language & Logic:ย Expert proficiency inย VHDL; experience with high-reliability design techniques likeย triple modular redundancyย (TMR)ย is a plus.
  • Tools:ย Expert-level use ofย Xilinx Vivado,ย Intel Quartus,ย Latticeย FPGAย orย Microchip Libero.
  • Lab Expertise:ย Mastery of high-speed digital probing, power analysis (using tools like XPE), andย debuggingย hardware-software interfaces.
  • Industry Interfaces:ย Experience withย ADC/DACย interfacingย (using JESD204B or LVDS) for high-precisionย instrumentation.
  • Environment:ย Understanding of design constraints for battery-operated or power-limited remote systems.

Qualifications

  • Education:ย B.E./M.Tech in Electrical, Electronics, orย Instrumentation Engineering.
  • Experience:ย 3+ years inย FPGAย development, preferably with exposure toย industrial automation,ย subsea electronics, orย downhole tools.
  • Soft Skills:ย Strong analytical mindset for "root cause"ย debuggingย in complex, multi-disciplinary systems.
