Job description

Overview

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to our mission of saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). We work at the invitation of governments to support them and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems.

CHAI was founded in 2002 in response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with the goal of dramatically reducing the price of life-saving drugs and increasing access to these medicines in the countries with the highest burden of the disease. Over the following two decades, CHAI has expanded its focus. Today, along with HIV, we work with our partners to prevent and treat infectious diseases such as COVID-19, Ebola, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Our work has also expanded into cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and other non-communicable diseases, and we work to accelerate the rollout of lifesaving vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. We are also investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen health systems through programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. With each new and innovative program, our strategy is grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that governments lead the solutions, that programs are designed to scale nationally, and learnings are shared globally.

At CHAI, our people are our greatest asset, and none of this work would be possible without their talent, time, dedication, and passion for our mission and values. We are a highly diverse team of enthusiastic individuals across 40 countries with a broad range of skill sets and life experiences. CHAI is deeply grounded in the countries we work in, with the majority of our staff based in program countries. Learn more about our exciting work: www.clintonhealthaccess.org

CHAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and is committed to providing an environment of fairness, and mutual respect where all applicants have access to equal employment opportunities. CHAI values diversity and inclusion, and recognizes that our mission is best advanced by the leadership and contributions of people with diverse experience, backgrounds, and culture.

CHAI's Market Shaping Team Overview

The CHAI Market Shaping Team (MST) is responsible for envisioning, executing, and monitoring market shaping interventions aimed at improving access to health commodities for LMICs. MST shapes markets across the full product continuum, from R&D and regulatory strategy through manufacturing, procurement, country introduction, adoption, and scale-up. Interventions include target product profile development, pooled procurement, demand forecasting, negotiation of access terms, and supply chain optimization. Where a specific barrier requires it, CHAI structures risk-sharing instruments - advance market commitments, volume guarantees, product subsidies, procurement and payment guarantees, and working capital facilities - matched to that barrier and stage of the product lifecycle. Equally, MST works on the demand side to convert improved access terms into uptake, partnering with governments and country teams to build the evidence and policy case for adoption, secure guideline inclusion and financing, plan product introduction and scale-up, and strengthen the workforce, supply chain, and service delivery capacity needed to reach patients. This work also generates the demand signals and volume forecasts that underpin MST's supply-side negotiations.

MST collaborates closely with internal and external stakeholders to maximize the public health impact of a proposed intervention and ensure alignment with current and future policy goals. MST also works to build stronger relationships with manufacturers and distributors to devise and execute sustainable solutions for improved access to health commodities. Examples of the types of market shaping efforts CHAI has been involved with include the following:

  • New agreement secures historic US$1 price for HIV self-test

  • Global partnership to make available 120M affordable, quality COVID-19 rapid tests for low- and middle-income countries

  • Innovative agreement launches affordable, optimal second-line HIV treatment in LMICs

  • Breakthrough agreement will reduce costs and increase access to diagnostic technology for LMICs

  • New high-quality antiretroviral therapy to be launched in South Africa, Kenya, and over 90 LMICs at reduced price

  • Unitaid, CHAI, and Wits RHI enter into a landmark agreement with Dr. Reddy's to make HIV prevention tool lenacapavir affordable in LMICs

Position Overview

CHAI's Market Shaping Team is seeking an Associate to support CHAI's market shaping strategies across programmatic areas, including supporting two key related projects being led by the MST Women's and Newborn Health (WNH) and Diagnostics sub-teams:

  • Developing a market access strategy for a portfolio of preeclampsia- and maternal anemia-related commodities to accelerate their validation, affordability, and introduction into antenatal care across LMICs.

  • Developing a market access strategy for a portfolio of artificial intelligence (AI)-supported diagnostics, including AI-enabled point-of-care ultrasound (AI-POCUS) and other tools to transform diagnostic capability in LMICs.

We are seeking a highly motivated, entrepreneurial individual with outstanding analytical capabilities, problem-solving ability and communication skills. The individual must be comfortable synthesizing large amounts of quantitativeand qualitativedata into thoughtful recommendations. They must also be able to function independently, balance multiple priorities simultaneously, and work effectively across a range of stakeholders in a multicultural environment. CHAI places great value on the following personal qualities: resourcefulness, humility, responsibility, tenacity, independence, energy, and work ethic.

Preference is for this role to be based in a CHAI program country, subject to MST, country team leadership approval and ability to obtain work authorization; US-based candidates will also be considered. This role will require up to 25% travel.

Responsibilities

The Associate will support these projects by driving forward the rigorous market analyses required to thoughtfully design and implement strategies to support investment decisions by suppliers, country programs, donors, and other key stakeholders to secure access to these commodities for LMICs. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing demand forecasts and uptake models for new and existing commodities to inform access pricing strategies and supplier negotiations

  • Executing costing and impact analysis for new models of financing, procurement, and distribution, including all-inclusive pricing, equipment leasing, pooled procurement, and tender optimization

  • Analysing country introduction and scale-up requirements, including cost, budget impact, and financing options, to support government adoption decisions and country readiness planning

  • Preparing presentations, reports, investment cases, and other analyses to inform global policy and increase the evidence base for interventions; presenting findings of analyses to internal and external audiences

  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders - including CHAI country, program, and cross-cutting teams - as well as external partners - including donors, governments, suppliers, and global partners - to support the design and execution of supply- and demand-side interventions

  • Developing market analytic frameworks, tools, and templates and serving as a market analytics resource across MST projects

  • Supporting business development efforts by contributing to proposal writing and donor engagement

  • Maintaining effective relationships with senior-level stakeholders across CHAI and partner organizations

  • Executing other responsibilities as needed by the team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of relevant experience in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment (e.g., management consulting, industry, global health, government, or multilateral organizations)

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative modelling skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare compelling presentations and written reports and present effectively to both internal and external stakeholders, including donors and more senior-level individuals
