Job description

Position Overview:

The Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA) is a 125+ year old organization whose mission is to serve legal professionals across Maryland and beyond.  As part of that mission, the MSBA develops and delivers 100+ accredited continuing legal education (CLE) programs annually both online and in person. The MSBA Learning Department is seeking a dynamic and highly organized Program Attorney to support the development, coordination, and delivery of continuing legal education programs. The Program Attorney will work closely with MSBA members, volunteer subject matter expert presenters, and MSBA staff to create educational content, ensure compliance with accreditation standards, and contribute to the overall success of MSBA CLE initiatives. This position offers an excellent opportunity to help shape the professional development of attorneys while promoting the delivery of high-quality legal education across a variety of delivery methods.

The ideal candidate has a “get it done” mindset, a focus on high-quality output, strong analytical skills, the creativity to overcome complex workflow obstacles, and a proactive drive to leave processes and teams better than you found them.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Program Development & Content Creation:
    • Design, research, and create educational content for CLE programs, webinars, and in person seminars.
    • Develop courses specifically for the on-demand catalog, repurpose long format courses into portable microlearning opportunities, and audio only online learning.
    • Collaborate with subject matter experts and presenters to develop timely, relevant, and engaging legal education materials.
    • Ensure that program topics reflect current legal trends, best practices, and ethical considerations.
  • Accreditation & Compliance:
    • Oversee the submission of CLE programs for accreditation to state bar authorities and ensure compliance with all continuing legal education requirements.
    • Maintain knowledge of evolving state CLE regulations and accreditation standards.
    • Review and approve materials and presentations to ensure they meet bar requirements and quality standards.
  • Program Coordination & Execution:
    • Manage the logistics and execution of in-person and virtual CLE events, including scheduling, speaker coordination, and materials distribution.
    • Collaborate with marketing, events, and technology teams to promote CLE programs and ensure smooth delivery of events.
    • Act as a liaison between the CLE department and bar members, assisting with program inquiries and feedback.
  • Speaker & Presenter Support:
    • Recruit, vet, and provide ongoing support to CLE speakers and presenters.
    • Ensure that speakers are equipped with the necessary tools and information for successful presentations.
    • Develop and distribute presenter guidelines and materials.
  • Content Evaluation & Improvement:
    • Collect feedback from participants and speakers to assess the effectiveness of CLE programs.
    • Monitor attendee engagement and satisfaction, suggesting improvements based on data and feedback.
    • Stay informed about emerging trends in legal education and propose new formats, topics, or delivery methods to enhance program offerings.
  • Research & Legal Trends:
    • Conduct research on developments in legal practice and ethics to identify relevant CLE topics.
    • Review recent case law, statutory changes, and regulations that impact the legal profession for inclusion in CLE programs.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Maintain CLE program records, including attendance, accreditation applications, credit tracking, credit reporting, and customer course completion and credit hours.
    • Assist in preparing reports and updates for the CLE department and the bar association’s board or committees.
    • Provide assistance with budget management and cost-effective delivery of programs.
Intermittent/Adhoc Duties
  • Regular attendance at high-profile section meetings, committee events, and networking mixers (typically 1–2 per month).
  • Participation in regular “all-hands” development days and strategic planning sessions at our Baltimore headquarters.
  • Support of the CLE team on-site for marquee educational programs, including the signature Legal Summit every June in Ocean City, Maryland, ensuring the smooth delivery of course materials and engaging directly with the members who use our resources.
  • To ensure organizational agility, you will regularly cross-train in other critical roles within the Learning and CLE departments to ensure seamless continuity of service.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the broader success of MSBA.
Qualifications & Competencies:
  • Education and Experience:
    • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
    • Active member in good standing of the state bar or eligible for reciprocity.
    • Minimum of 5 years of legal practice experience.
    • Prior experience in program coordination, legal research, or content development is a plus.
  • Problem Solving & Execution:
    • Proven ability to identify and define workflow bottlenecks and proactively develop and implement the solutions required to break them.
    • A track record of navigating stalled projects by finding alternative solutions or adjusting production methods, ensuring all projects proceed to completion in a timely manner, regardless of obstacles.
  • AI Aptitude & Operational Efficiency:
    • A demonstrable favorable view of Generative AI as a tool for legal research, drafting assistance, and workflow automation.
    • Hands-on experience using Large Language Models (LLMs) like Gemini, Claude, or ChatGPT to summarize transcripts, draft outlines, or automate repetitive editorial tasks.
  • Project Driving & Technology:
    • Experience in identifying workflow bottlenecks and implementing creative solutions that resulted in measurable time savings.
    • Ability to demonstrate prior success in managing high-volume project lifecycles.
    • Experience implementing new workflows or technology (e.g., Asana, AI tools) to solve systemic delays.
  • Required Skills and Competencies:
    • Strong understanding of continuing legal education requirements, processes, and accreditation standards.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex legal concepts into accessible educational content.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Proficiency with office software (e.g., Zoom, G-Suite, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) or webinar platforms.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a positive, fast-paced team-oriented environment.
    • Strong research skills and attention to detail.
Work Environment:
  • This position will be based in Maryland with opportunities for hybrid work arrangements.
  • MSBA embraces a remote-first workflow for deep-focus tasks. However, this role thrives on active, in-person presence at key moments throughout the year, allowing the Programs Attorney to scout new speakers, identify emerging legal trends, and build social capital.
  • A flexible and collaborative work culture focused on professional development.
  • Must reside within a commutable distance of the Baltimore office and be available for regular travel to Ocean City and other Maryland-based event sites
This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer with a passion for education and a desire to contribute to the professional development of the legal community. If you are driven, detail-oriented, and eager to make a meaningful impact, we encourage you to apply.
