What does a movie script writer do?

A Movie Script Writer, or screenwriter, creates scripts for films by developing characters, dialogue, and storylines. They often work from original ideas or adapt existing material into compelling narratives. Screenwriters collaborate closely with producers, directors, and other creatives to refine the script to fit the vision of the film. The job requires strong storytelling skills, creativity, and an understanding of cinematic structure.

What are the typical stages involved in developing a movie script, and how does a movie script writer collaborate with other film professionals?

Movie Script Writers usually start with idea generation and brainstorming, followed by drafting outlines and treatments before writing the full script. Throughout the process, writers collaborate closely with producers, directors, and sometimes studio executives to ensure the script aligns with the project's vision and constraints. Revisions based on feedback are common, and writers may also participate in script readings or workshops. This collaborative approach helps refine the screenplay and ensures that it is well-suited for production and audience engagement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the movie script writer position, and why are they important?

A Movie Script Writer needs expertise in storytelling, screenwriting structure, creative writing, and often a background in film, English, or related fields. Familiarity with screenwriting software such as Final Draft or Celtx, and knowledge of standard screenplay formatting, are typically necessary. Strong collaboration, adaptability, and openness to feedback help writers excel in this highly creative but iterative process. These skills are crucial for crafting compelling scripts that meet industry standards and work effectively within the collaborative environment of film production.

How do I become a movie script writer?

To become a movie script writer, develop strong storytelling skills, learn screenplay formatting, and gain experience by writing and revising scripts. Building a portfolio, networking with industry professionals, and submitting work to competitions or agencies can help establish a career in screenwriting.

How much money do movie script writers make?

Movie script writers, also known as screenwriters, typically earn between $50,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, project scope, and industry connections. Established writers working on major films or with agents can earn higher fees, often negotiated per project or script. Payment structures may include upfront payments, royalties, or residuals based on the film's success.

Is script writing in demand?

Script writing for movies and television remains a competitive but steady field, with demand driven by the entertainment industry's growth and the popularity of streaming platforms. Successful script writers often need strong storytelling skills, industry connections, and the ability to adapt to evolving media formats. While job opportunities can vary, skilled writers with a portfolio of work are consistently sought after in the industry.

This role will own features end-to-end, from Node.js Lambda APIs and PostgreSQL data models to the Angular frontend used by studio clients. You will contribute to platform integrations, server-side event pipelines, compliance-related data workflows, and infrastructure improvements that support scale, reliability, privacy, and performance.

Why This Role Matters: This role directly supports Fandango’s ability to help studio partners reach and understand audiences more effectively. Your work will enable new advertising platform integrations, strengthen customer analytics capabilities, and improve the reliability of critical audience and conversion workflows.

This is a remote role, with opportunities for in-person collaboration, team connection, and business-critical meetings approximately 10% of the time.

What You'll Do:

  • Build and maintain end-to-end platform integrations, including Conversion API and Targeting Connector capabilities for new and existing advertising partners.
  • Develop and evolve Lambda-based REST APIs that support audience creation, segmentation, estimation, and distribution across multiple ad platforms.
  • Maintain and enhance server-side event pipelines that route purchase and engagement data to advertising platform conversion endpoints.
  • Implement deletion, opt-out, and compliance-related data feeds in alignment with privacy requirements such as GDPR and CCPA.
  • Deliver frontend features in Angular, NgRx, RxJS, and TypeScript for new channels, distribution flows, dashboards, and client-facing platform capabilities.
  • Contribute to infrastructure and delivery improvements using AWS, Terraform, Serverless Framework, Jenkins, Docker, and emerging GitHub Actions workflows.
Qualifications

What You Bring:

  • Senior-level fullstack engineering experience, with the ability to own technical design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Strong backend experience with Node.js, serverless Lambda APIs, asynchronous patterns, REST API design, and third-party API integrations.
  • Working experience with Python 3.x, including the ability to review, debug, or support ETL scripts, AWS Glue jobs, or related data workflows.
  • Deep familiarity with AWS services such as Lambda, Step Functions, API Gateway, S3, RDS/Aurora PostgreSQL, and Cognito.
  • Strong experience designing and optimizing PostgreSQL-backed data models, writing performant SQL, applying effective indexing strategies, and using Sequelize ORM to support reliable application workflows.
  • Experience building production-ready frontend features with Angular, TypeScript, NgRx, and RxJS, including integration with backend APIs and distributed data workflows.
  • Experience with Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, including query design, aggregations, and performance considerations.
  • Comfort working with infrastructure and CI/CD tools such as Terraform, Serverless Framework, Docker, Jenkins, Git, and GitHub Actions.
  • A practical understanding of AWS cost management, resource efficiency, and basic FinOps principles.
  • A collaborative engineering mindset grounded in Trust, with sound judgment, accountability, and care for production-quality work.
  • A commitment to Teamwork, including partnering with product, QA, data engineering, and other cross-functional stakeholders to deliver durable solutions.
  • Clear Transparency in technical communication, tradeoff discussions, documentation, and risk escalation.
  • Strong Agility, with the ability to adapt across backend, frontend, data, and infrastructure priorities in a lean engineering environment.
  • An Entrepreneurial Spirit, bringing ownership, curiosity, and initiative to ambiguous problems and new platform opportunities.

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience with GitHub Actions, AWS Secrets Manager, SSM, Cypress, or AWS data services including EMR, Glue, Redshift, or Spark.
  • Familiarity with maintaining or modernizing legacy deployment and infrastructure components, including Puppet-managed configuration, Apache httpd, SPA routing, or security header management.
