What is a mover helper?

Mover helpers are workers who assist in the packing, loading, unloading, and transportation of furniture and other items during moves. They work as part of a moving crew, helping to lift heavy objects, wrap fragile items for protection, and ensure that everything is securely placed in moving vehicles. Mover helpers may also help with assembling and disassembling furniture, and sometimes assist with basic cleaning tasks. This role requires physical strength, teamwork, and good customer service skills. Mover helpers are essential to making residential and commercial moves efficient and safe.

What does a mover helper do?

A mover helper assists residents or companies with moving and transporting materials, furniture, and equipment to another location or a storage unit. Your responsibilities for each customer are to pack boxes, load and unload a moving truck, and transport boxes, appliances, and other items using a moving truck. Your job duties also require you to clean and maintain moving equipment and your vehicle, take inventory of moving materials on your truck and at the warehouse, and keep a record of all items you transport. Mover helper jobs are usually full-time with a range of shifts and often require safe driving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mover helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mover Helper, you need physical strength, stamina, and basic knowledge of safe lifting techniques, with a high school diploma often preferred. Familiarity with hand trucks, dollies, moving straps, and inventory checklists is typically required on the job. Strong teamwork, good communication, and a reliable work ethic set top performers apart in this position. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and damage-free moves while providing excellent service to clients.

What are some common challenges faced by mover helpers, and how can they be managed on the job?

Mover Helpers often encounter challenges such as lifting heavy or bulky items, working in various weather conditions, and ensuring the safe transport of clients' belongings. To manage these challenges, it's important to use proper lifting techniques, communicate clearly with team members, and follow established safety protocols. Additionally, being adaptable and maintaining a positive attitude can help when working with different clients and navigating unexpected obstacles, such as tight staircases or traffic delays.

  • Reach overhead, crouch, squat, grasp, twist, and navigate the body to safely move items through tight spaces, hallways, doorways, stairwells, and elevators
  • Stand for several consecutive hours

Customer Service Responsibilities

  • Be in dress code at all times
  • Advise clients on best practices to safely move their items, including bubble wrapping and boxing glass, porcelain, and other fragile items
  • Provide materials to support safe transport and inform your Driver/Team Leader to track inventory and charge appropriately
  • Inform your Driver/Team Leader where advice or material costs are refused
  • Always use floor runners to protect the home and proper equipment to safely do the job
  • Completely pad all furniture with moving blankets, covering all sides including underneath
