The Job
San Bernardino County is recruiting for Regional Parks Recreation Leaders* to assist with implementing and running various outdoor experience programs, events, and tasks throughout the parks system. Regional Parks and their locations are: Prado (Chino), Cucamonga-Guasti (Ontario), Glen Helen (San Bernardino), Mojave Narrows (Victorville), Mojave River Forks (Hesperia), Calico Ghost Town (Yermo, near Barstow), Yucaipa (Yucaipa), and Big Morongo Preserve (Morongo Valley).
Essential job duties may include:
  • Assist in the development of programs, activities, and special events related to nature appreciation, natural and cultural history, environmental education, agriculture, outdoor recreation, and related fields.
  • Teach ecological themes as related to the San Bernardino National Forest in an outdoor setting; studies include geography, wildlife, plants and Native American history in the region.
  • Assist with fishing programs, including but not limited to, fishing workshops and derbies.
  • Work various special events or recreation programs.

*Office Title: Public Service Employee
Public Service Employees are recurrent, non-regular, limited duration positions classified as a Public Service Employee (PSE). The successful candidate shall be considered at-will throughout the term of their employment, and will not attain regular status.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Pre-Employment Process: Incumbents must pass a background investigation, which includes fingerprinting, work history verification, as well as a job-related physical exam and drug screening.
Availability: Must be available to work varied schedules, including days, evenings, weekends and holidays. Positions are part-time (0-30 hours/week). Assignments and schedules are made based on the needs of the Regional Parks Department. Indicate your preferred availability on the supplemental questionnaire of the application.
Public Service Employee: These are recurrent, non-regular positions classified as a Public Service Employee (PSE). The successful candidate shall be considered at-will throughout the term of their employment, and will not attain regular status.
Physical: Must be able to perform work that requires physical labor including: lifting, carrying, and moving items up to 60 lbs, bending, pushing, pulling, stooping, climbing, kneeling, walking, and standing for long periods of time
Travel/License: Travel throughout San Bernardino County is required. A valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance are required at the time of appointment, and must be maintained throughout employment.
Sponsorship: San Bernardino County is unable to consider candidates who require Visa Sponsorship at this time or in the future. Candidates must be able to present their legal right to work in the United States at the time of employment.
Minimum Requirements
Must be Eighteen (18) years of age
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: Six (6) months full time equivalent experience (paid or volunteer) in a customer services related industry which includes in-person contact with the general public OR six (6) months experience (paid or volunteer) in a maintenance role where landscaping, irrigation, construction, or custodial duties were performed.
Desired Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have completed one or more years of college coursework in teaching, environmental and/or biological sciences, botany, zoology, wildlife programs, animal care, history, or related field. The ideal candidate will also have experience teaching and/or leading youth in an outdoor environment.
