What is a molecule?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a molecular biologist, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in molecular research roles, and how can they be addressed?
What is the difference between Molecule vs Chemist?
| Aspect | Molecule | Chemist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Typically a degree in chemistry or related field | Same as Molecule, often with advanced certifications |
| Work Environment | Laboratories, research facilities, manufacturing plants | Laboratories, research centers, industrial settings |
| Industry Usage | Used in scientific research, pharmaceuticals, chemical manufacturing | Involved in research, development, quality control, and production |
The term 'Molecule' generally refers to a chemical structure or entity, whereas 'Chemist' is a professional role involved in studying and manipulating chemical substances. Both share similar educational backgrounds and work environments, but 'Molecule' is more about the chemical entity itself, while 'Chemist' is the practitioner working with such entities.

Job description
The Molecular Pathology and Cytogenomics Section within the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, OH) is seeking two full-time attendings to join our Professional Staff.
The Molecular Pathology and Cytogenomics (MPCG) Section supports the testing needs of the Cleveland Clinic Health System and Cleveland Clinic Laboratories, our regional and national outreach program. The Section houses Cytogenomics and Molecular Diagnostics services and offers clinical laboratory testing based on next generation sequencing, cytogenetics, FISH, chromosomal microarrays, PCR-based testing, mass spectrometry, and more, with dedicated bioinformatics and laboratory genetic counselor support. The Section has been experiencing rapid growth and transformation, expanding to include comprehensive sequencing platforms, methylation array for tumor classification, and partnering with the Diagnostics Institute Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. Responsibilities are based on a Patients First attitude with an emphasis on professional interpretive services and close interaction with clinical colleagues.
The MPCG Section is dedicated to efficient operation of the laboratory that includes, but is not limited to, test menu expansion via new test development and validation, mentoring of medical technologists, laboratory resources management and stewardship, quality assurance, continuous quality improvement, regulatory compliance, efficient communication with clinical and administrative colleagues, teaching of residents and fellows, results interpretation and test sign-out, and more. The Section provides testing for both oncology (solid tumor and hematological-based) and constitutional genetics. Opportunities for research and other scholarly activities are available, including within the newly established Molecular Research Core, which is embedded within the Section. The Section also hosts a Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship Program. An essential element of the job is mentoring and teaching residents and fellows.
Applicants ideally have diagnostic expertise and scholarly accomplishments and/or potential in molecular pathology and cytogenomics. We are especially interested in individuals with several years of technical director experience, as well as candidates with an interest or additional certification in Hematopathology; recent fellowship graduates are also encouraged to apply. Additional sign-out opportunities are available across the section depending on the candidates interests. For candidates with experience and interest, there will be upcoming opportunities for leadership positions. Although most of the candidates efforts will be in clinical operations, participation in activities that support Cleveland Clinics educational and research mission is encouraged and expected.
Applicants should hold an MD, MD/PhD or PhD degree . Certification (or eligibility for certification) by either the ABP/ABMGG in Molecular Genetics Pathology or the ABMGG in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics is essential. A faculty appointment at a rank commensurate with experience is available at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University.
This position in a nationally recognized and growing Molecular Pathology and Cytogenomics service is offered with an extremely competitive total compensation and benefits package. This is a chance to work in a world-class medical institution in a highly collegial and dynamic environment. Applications will be evaluated upon receipt and will be accepted until the position is filled.
