What is a Mohs Tech?

Mohs Techs, or Mohs Technicians, are specialized laboratory professionals who prepare tissue samples for examination during Mohs micrographic surgery, a precise technique used to treat skin cancer. Their main responsibilities include freezing, cutting, staining, and mounting tissue sections so that a Mohs surgeon can examine them under a microscope. By ensuring the accuracy and quality of these slides, Mohs Techs play a crucial role in helping surgeons remove all cancerous cells while sparing as much healthy tissue as possible. Mohs Techs typically work in dermatology clinics, hospitals, or specialized labs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mohs Tech, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mohs Technician, you need knowledge of histology, experience in tissue processing and embedding, and often an associate’s degree or histotechnician certification. Familiarity with microtomes, cryostats, staining protocols, and laboratory information systems is crucial. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and effective communication with dermatologists are standout soft skills. These abilities ensure accurate slide preparation and efficient workflow, which are vital for supporting timely and precise skin cancer treatment.

What are some common challenges Mohs Techs face during a typical workday, and how can they be addressed?

Mohs Techs often face challenges such as handling a high volume of tissue samples with precision and working efficiently under time pressure, since rapid and accurate slide preparation is crucial for Mohs surgery. Maintaining clear communication with dermatologists and surgical teams is also essential to ensure correct specimen orientation and labeling. To address these challenges, Mohs Techs benefit from strong organizational skills, ongoing training in cryostat techniques, and implementing standardized protocols for sample handling. Collaboration and attention to detail are key to ensuring patient safety and successful outcomes.
