What is a Mohs Tech Medical Assistant?

Mohs Tech Medical Assistants are healthcare professionals who support dermatologists and Mohs surgeons during Mohs micrographic surgery, a precise technique for removing skin cancer. They assist with patient preparation, specimen handling, and laboratory processing, including preparing and staining tissue slides for microscopic examination. Their role is crucial in ensuring accurate and timely results during the surgery, which helps achieve the best patient outcomes. Mohs Tech Medical Assistants often work in dermatology offices, clinics, or surgical centers that perform Mohs procedures.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Mohs Tech Medical Assistant?

To thrive as a Mohs Tech Medical Assistant, you need a solid understanding of histology, surgical assisting, and specimen preparation, typically supported by medical assistant certification and specialized training in Mohs procedures. Familiarity with lab equipment, cryostats, and electronic medical record (EMR) systems is usually necessary. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring accurate specimen processing, supporting efficient surgical workflows, and delivering high-quality patient care in dermatologic surgery settings.

What challenges do Mohs Tech Medical Assistants face during surgical procedures, and how can they prepare for them?

Mohs Tech Medical Assistants often encounter fast-paced and detail-oriented environments, especially during multi-stage Mohs surgeries. Challenges include maintaining strict sterile technique, handling and labeling tissue specimens accurately, and effectively communicating with both patients and the surgical team. To be prepared, it's important to have strong organizational skills, remain adaptable to changing priorities, and stay calm under pressure.
