What is a modular job?

Modular jobs refer to roles involved in the design, construction, assembly, or management of modular structures or systems. These jobs can include positions in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and engineering, where prefabricated modules are built off-site and then transported for assembly at the final location. Modular job roles can vary from project managers and designers to assembly line workers and quality inspectors. The modular approach is valued for its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability compared to traditional construction methods.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in modular construction roles?

Professionals in modular construction often encounter challenges such as coordinating logistics for transporting prefabricated modules to worksites, maintaining quality control during off-site manufacturing, and ensuring seamless integration with on-site construction teams. Timely communication and collaboration with architects, engineers, and contractors are essential to address design adjustments and meet project deadlines. Additionally, adapting to evolving building codes and standards for modular construction can require ongoing learning and flexibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a modular construction specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Modular Construction Specialist, you need a solid understanding of construction principles, project management, and modular building techniques, often supported by a construction-related degree or certification. Familiarity with CAD software, BIM systems, and modular fabrication tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this field. These skills ensure efficient project delivery, cost control, and high-quality modular structures in a rapidly evolving industry.

Job description

The Senior Civil Structural Designer will design metallic, concrete, and modular structures, systems, and components for the SMR-300 plant, supporting engineering and licensing requirements for deployment worldwide. The role requires a willingness to learn and develop practical solutions to challenging design problems, while closely coordinating with fabrication and construction partners to ensure constructability. The designer will also support Holtec's deployment of a novel modular steel-concrete structural system that enables accelerated schedules and reduced costs through extensive shop fabrication and site automation.
Location: Camden, NJ (On-site)
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develop detailed 3D models and 2D design drawings for civil, structural, and architectural structures, systems, and components (SSCs) supporting the SMR-300 Small Modular Reactor program.
  • Prepare general arrangement (GA) drawings, fabrication drawings, erection drawings, and structural connection details for steel, concrete, and composite structures.
  • Utilize AutoCAD, Tekla, Revit, and other design software to create accurate engineering models and construction documentation.
  • Support the design and deployment of modular steel-concrete structural systems that facilitate accelerated construction schedules, enhanced constructability, and cost-efficient project execution.
  • Coordinate closely with civil, structural, mechanical, piping, and equipment engineers to integrate design requirements into plant layouts and structural arrangements.
  • Develop structural detailing for foundations, concrete slabs, steel framing systems, platforms, gratings, supports, and other plant structures.
  • Review equipment layouts, piping general arrangement drawings, and isometric drawings to ensure structural interfaces are accurately incorporated into design deliverables.
  • Collaborate with fabrication shops, suppliers, and construction organizations to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and constructible.
  • Assist in resolving design challenges through innovative engineering solutions while maintaining compliance with project requirements and applicable industry standards.
  • Generate and maintain design documentation, drawing packages, model revisions, and associated technical records in accordance with quality assurance requirements.
  • Support engineering analyses and design verification activities by providing accurate geometry, structural layouts, and design data.
  • Incorporate applicable U.S. and international codes, standards, and industry best practices into structural detailing and design documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews, interdisciplinary coordination meetings, constructability reviews, and model walkthroughs.
  • Support nuclear licensing and regulatory documentation efforts by providing design information and drawing updates as required.

  • Assist with field support activities, fabrication reviews, and construction issue resolution during project execution.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes, modeling standards, drafting practices, and modular construction methodologies.

Requirements:
  • Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural or Mechanical Engineering
  • 5 years of experience using AutoCAD or Tekla to create 3D models and 2D detailed drawings
  • Formal training in AutoCAD, Tekla, Revit or SolidWorks
  • Conversant in Revit for concrete structure detailing and Tekla for structural steel detailing
  • Experience in producing GA drawings and connection details for SSCs
  • Experience in working with engineers, fabricators, and constructors in developing drawings
  • Knowledge of weld symbols and structural design codes and standards
  • Capable of reading equipment layouts, piping GA and isometric drawings
  • Display creative skills and problem-solving approach for resolving design issues
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills
  • Prior experience in nuclear industry
  • Industry experience in designing building foundations, elevated slabs and steel gratings
  • Exposure to US and UK civil and structural codes and standards
  • Experience in creating meshed models using HyperMesh or ANSYS
