What is a modeling and simulation job?

Modeling and simulation jobs involve creating digital or mathematical models to represent real-world systems, processes, or phenomena, and then using simulations to analyze their behavior under various scenarios. Professionals in this field use specialized software and computational techniques to predict outcomes, optimize designs, and inform decision-making in industries like engineering, defense, healthcare, and manufacturing. These roles often require strong analytical skills, proficiency in programming, and a background in mathematics or science. Modeling and simulation experts help organizations save time and resources by testing ideas virtually before applying them in real life.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a modeling and simulation specialist?

To thrive as a Modeling and Simulation Specialist, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in mathematics, and a background in computer science or engineering, often supported by a relevant degree. Expertise with simulation software (such as MATLAB, Simulink, or Arena), programming languages (like Python or C++), and knowledge of modeling standards is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate models, effective simulations, and actionable insights that drive decision-making in complex systems.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in modeling and simulation roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Modeling and Simulation often encounter challenges such as integrating complex data from multiple sources, ensuring model accuracy, and communicating technical results to non-technical stakeholders. Addressing these challenges typically involves close collaboration with subject matter experts, ongoing model validation and verification, and using clear visualizations to explain insights. Building strong interdisciplinary communication skills and staying current with evolving simulation tools can also help professionals effectively navigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Modeling And Simulation vs Data Analyst?

Job description

Description:

POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON CONTRACT AWARD

We are seeking a highly skilled Computer Engineer with a strong specialization in Modeling & Simulation (M&S) to support NAWCAD WOLF’s Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems (ATC&LS) Division based out of Patuxent River, MD. In this role, you will perform hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation engineering, model complex multi-sensor radar data processing networks, and design synthetic test environments. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring that shipboard, shore-based, and expeditionary air traffic management systems seamlessly integrate into current and future Navy architectures.

Key Responsibilities

  • HWIL & Simulation Architecture: Design, configure, and maintain hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation environments to test real-world ATC equipment, including Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), radar processors, and tactical data links.
  • System Modeling: Develop and execute high-fidelity computer simulations to analyze radar propagation, sensor fusion, and airspace integration constraints for both manned and unmanned air combat vehicles.
  • Interface Testing: Program and maintain custom interfaces ( drivers, digital and analog signal emulation) to bridge physical tactical hardware with simulated system environments.
  • Verification & Validation (V&V): Formulate M&S test strategies to validate system requirements, identify performance gaps, and mitigate technical obsolescence risks in legacy systems like the AN/SPN radar series.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate directly with government engineering leads, Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), and configuration managers to transition successful rapid prototypes from laboratory environments to fleet installations.
Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a highly related technical field.
  • Experience: 5+ years of engineering experience with a demonstrable background in Modeling & Simulation (M&S) applications.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency with simulation frameworks and modeling tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Ansys, or equivalent DoD-standard M&S tools).
    • Strong understanding of hardware interfaces, network protocols (TCP/IP, UDP), serial communication, and military data bus standards (e.g., MIL-STD-1553).
    • Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded system testing environments.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of Naval Air Traffic Control systems, Joint Interoperability standards, or previous experience working within an oLSI framework.
  • Citizenship & Security:
    • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
    • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance.
