What is model systems engineering?

Model Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that uses models to support the design, analysis, and management of complex engineering systems. It involves creating abstract representations (models) of systems to better understand their behavior, requirements, and interactions throughout the system's lifecycle. This approach helps engineers identify potential problems early, optimize system performance, and ensure that the final product meets its intended goals. Model Systems Engineering is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and software engineering.

How does a model systems engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

As a Model Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and quality assurance specialists to ensure that system models accurately reflect project requirements and constraints. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, integrating feedback, and updating system models to accommodate changes in project scope. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical details between different teams are crucial, as your models serve as the foundation for development and decision-making throughout the project. This collaborative environment fosters both technical and interpersonal growth, allowing you to develop a holistic understanding of complex systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering principles, mathematical modeling, and often a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of systems engineering standards such as INCOSE certification, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure accurate system representations, effective collaboration, and successful project outcomes in complex engineering environments.

What is the difference between Model Systems Engineering vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Systems EngineeringSystems Engineer

Job description

We are looking for a Senior Model-Based Systems Engineer - Integration, Verification & Validation (IV&V) to own interface management and the full system verification and validation program across Rondo's products. This role is responsible for planning, defining, and reporting on all integration and V&V activities, from requirements through final evidence packages.
What You'll Do
Interface Management
  • Own all interface boundary definitions and configuration control; author and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs), delegating responsibility to subsystem leads where appropriate to ensure 100% interface coverage and oversight.
  • Use interface analysis methods - context diagrams, N2 diagrams, functional analysis, FMEA/STPA, etc. - to identify interactions, assess risks, and define requirements; maintain bidirectional traceability to the system architecture and V&V artifacts.
  • Plan and define interface verification activities; coordinate cross-functional review and approval of interface changes; ensure every change triggers an impact assessment.
  • Verify that discipline engineers are performing clash detection, envelope compliance, and tolerance stack-up checks correctly in a federated CAD/PLM model.

V&V Planning and Definition
  • For every requirement, define the V&V success criteria, strategy, and method across a combination of model-based simulation and physical testing.
  • Develop V&V plans for system, subsystems, and system elements; author procedures; schedule verification events and enforce a logical bottom-up integration sequence.
  • Work in close collaboration with subsystem and functional to confirm plans are comprehensive.
  • Collect evidence from execution teams, review for correctness and completeness, manage discrepancies and noncompliance through to closure, and assemble the final compliance summary.
  • Plan and define V&V for all phases of on-site commissioning.

Toolchain Integration and Workflow Automation
  • Build and maintain automated workflows in an AI-powered systems engineering platform to connect requirements, interfaces, simulations, verification status, interface changes, and traceability into a live, continuously updated picture of program health.
  • Author AI skills to automate repetitive SE tasks: requirements quality checks, coverage gap detection, interface impact analysis, and verification status roll-ups.

Reporting and Compliance
  • Maintain end-to-end bidirectional traceability from stakeholder needs through requirements, interfaces, risks, and verification evidence.
  • Present verification readiness and evidence status at program reviews; produce compliance summaries and requests for variance or concessions where needed.
  • Ensure functional safety (IEC 61511), cybersecurity (IEC 62443), and other regulatory requirements are fully evidenced; apply risk-based prioritization.

What You Bring
  • 7+ years in systems, integration, or verification engineering on complex multi-disciplinary, software-intensive systems (energy storage, industrial, aerospace, automotive, robotics, or similar); 3+ years in a model-based engineering environment.
  • Hands-on interface management experience.
  • Demonstrated experience writing system-level V&V plans and defining verification strategies in a model-based simulation environment.
  • Experience with requirements management tools (Jama, Flow) and bidirectional traceability.
  • Comfortable with SolidWorks or equivalent PLM/CAD environments.
  • Familiarity with CFD and reduced-order modeling tools (Ansys, MATLAB/Simulink) sufficient to define and validate toolchain integrations.
  • Comfort working with AI-powered tools and building automation workflows; hands-on experience with Claude and MCP server development is a strong asset.
  • Working knowledge of SysML and at least one MBSE tool (Catia Magic/Cameo, Rhapsody, Capella); experience defining V&V attributes and traceability inside the model.
  • Familiarity with safety and risk analysis methods (FMEA, FTA, STPA) and their connection to verification planning.
  • Familiarity with top-down SE processes (ISO 15288, INCOSE) and MBSE methods.
  • Strong communication, able to teach, influence, and lead across functional design teams.

Bonus Points
  • Experience with model-based product line engineering and/or product variant management.
  • Familiarity with digital twins, model correlation, or early-stage virtual verification.
  • On-site commissioning experience, ideally on first-of-a-kind (FOAK) or early-commercial systems in energy storage, industrial, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Acceptance testing experience (FAT, SAT, or equivalent).
  • INCOSE ASEP or CSEP certification.

What We Offer:
  • Comprehensive Medical Benefits
  • Dental & Vision Benefits
  • Life Insurance and ADD
  • Up to 13 paid holidays per year, in addition to a company week-long holiday in December
  • Flexible time off policy
  • Catered lunches on-site
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Rondo HQ is close to Oakland airport - one block from the Bay - and has stunning Bay views!

This role necessitates being on-site at our Alameda HQ several times per week. The estimated annual salary range for this role is $185,000 - $210,000 and it would be eligible for Rondo's excellent benefits listed above plus additional compensation in the form of equity. Please note that some pay bands may have wide ranges of compensation to accommodate candidates' diverse sets of skill levels and experience.
