Model Systems Engineering information

What is model systems engineering?

Model Systems Engineering is an interdisciplinary approach that uses models to support the design, analysis, and management of complex engineering systems. It involves creating abstract representations (models) of systems to better understand their behavior, requirements, and interactions throughout the system's lifecycle. This approach helps engineers identify potential problems early, optimize system performance, and ensure that the final product meets its intended goals. Model Systems Engineering is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and software engineering.

How does a model systems engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project's lifecycle?

As a Model Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside software developers, hardware engineers, project managers, and quality assurance specialists to ensure that system models accurately reflect project requirements and constraints. Collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, integrating feedback, and updating system models to accommodate changes in project scope. Effective communication and the ability to translate technical details between different teams are crucial, as your models serve as the foundation for development and decision-making throughout the project. This collaborative environment fosters both technical and interpersonal growth, allowing you to develop a holistic understanding of complex systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a model systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems engineering principles, mathematical modeling, and often a relevant degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with modeling tools like MATLAB/Simulink, SysML, and simulation software, as well as knowledge of systems engineering standards such as INCOSE certification, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills set standout professionals apart in this field. These competencies ensure accurate system representations, effective collaboration, and successful project outcomes in complex engineering environments.

What is the difference between Model Systems Engineering vs Systems Engineer?

AspectModel Systems EngineeringSystems Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in engineering, certifications in systems modeling (e.g., INCOSE)Bachelor's or higher in engineering or related field, certifications vary
Work EnvironmentDesign and develop system models, simulations, and architectureDesign, analyze, and optimize complex systems in various industries
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in aerospace, defense, and systems integration firmsWidely across technology, manufacturing, aerospace, and defense sectors

Model Systems Engineering focuses on creating detailed system models and simulations to analyze system behavior, while Systems Engineers oversee the entire system lifecycle, ensuring integration and functionality. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and daily tasks.

Job description

Woven by Toyota is enabling Toyota's once-in-a-century transformation into a mobility company. Inspired by a legacy of innovating for the benefit of others, our mission is to challenge the current state of mobility through human-centric innovation - expanding what "mobility" means and how it serves society.
Our work centers on four pillars: AD/ADAS, our autonomous driving and advanced driver assist technologies; Arene, our software development platform for software-defined vehicles; Woven City, a test course for mobility; and Cloud & AI, the digital infrastructure powering our collaborative foundation. Business-critical functions empower these teams to execute, and together, we're working toward one bold goal: a world with zero accidents and enhanced well-being for all.
TEAM
Arene's vision is to enable the most programmable vehicles on the planet. The Arene Systems Engineering team drives the definition of the software systems needed to deliver this vision. The team collaborates with global partners to define requirements, conduct analyses, and create architectures for software components and interfaces used in next-generation Toyota vehicles. Engaged throughout the software development lifecycle, the Arene Systems Engineering team applies engineering expertise to ensure delivery of safe and secure software products. The Arene organization is growing and we are establishing an engineering center in Ann Arbor, MI to strengthen our global team.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We seek a highly technical and collaborative systems software engineer to bolster the Applied Engineering platform. You should possess deep systems programming expertise, a strong orientation toward solving complex platform integration problems, and enthusiasm for working in environments where vehicle software features require robust cross-platform and cross-domain data orchestration. The ideal candidate will have a passion for technology, be self-driven and a pragmatic approach to applying system engineering principles to modern software development practices. The ability to understand and distill complex customer requirements into testable and verifiable specifications is essential.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate with peer systems engineers, product, and global partners to design and implement software solutions as a part of the Applied Engineering team (SDK), ensuring reliability, scalability, and high performance
  • Develop, integrate, and maintain system-level software components, with a strong focus on C++ and embedded firmware for real-time automotive systems.
  • Implement and enhance middleware components, inter-process communication frameworks, and scheduling systems to support hardware-agnostic, update-friendly vehicle services that bridge multiple in-vehicle domains and support rapid feature deployment
  • Drive and support the development of system design specifications including state machines, sequence diagrams, and create testable system requirements, software requirements and establish traceability across all these artifacts. .
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex software and system-level issues, working closely with quality and integration engineers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • 4+ years of experience creating detailed system and software-level requirements for complex products
  • Bachelor degree or higher in systems engineering, computer science, embedded engineering, or related field
  • Experience with CATIA for architecture modeling and JAMA for requirement management are MUST for creating and documenting system and software architectures (SysML, UML)
  • Experience with breaking down stakeholder requests into use cases, traceable systems and software requirements along with acceptance tests
  • Deep understanding of vehicle networking, specifically in Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) and cockpit architecture, other ECU architectures
  • Ability to perform code reviews in C++, Python
  • Exposure to cloud platforms, containerization, and DevOps tooling is required
  • Proficiency with modern build systems and CI/CD environments (e.g., Bazel, GitHub/GitLab)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working in software projects
