What is the difference between Model Risk Manager vs Quantitative Analyst?
| Aspect | Model Risk Manager | Quantitative Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Advanced degrees in finance, statistics, or mathematics; certifications like FRM or CFA | Degree in finance, economics, mathematics, or related fields; often CFA or CQF |
| Work Environment | Focus on risk management teams within financial institutions; regulatory compliance | Analytical roles within trading, investment, or banking divisions; model development |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Financial institutions, banks, asset managers | Investment firms, hedge funds, banks, financial services |
The Model Risk Manager primarily oversees and mitigates risks associated with financial models, ensuring compliance and accuracy. In contrast, Quantitative Analysts develop and implement models to support trading, investment, or risk strategies. While both roles require strong quantitative skills and similar credentials, their focus areas differ—risk management versus model development and analysis.

Job description
At BBH, Partnership is more than a form of ownership-it's our approach to business and relationships. We know that supporting your professional and personal goals is the best way to help our clients and advance our business. We take that responsibility seriously. With a 200-year legacy and a shared passion for what's next, this is the right place to build a fulfilling career.
At Brown Brothers Harriman, we believe no job is too big or small for any of us to handle if it helps our clients. We value passionate, committed people who enjoy collaborating with others to find new solutions to complex business challenges. Someone who is driven to get things done and views obstacles as an exciting challenge that demands a creative solution. Above all, we seek someone who takes great pride in their work and is inspired and motivated by their role in protecting and enhancing our client's financial well-being.
If you are looking for an entrepreneurial environment where you can learn and thrive, Brown Brothers Harriman is the right place for you.
Join us as a Model Risk Senior Analyst
Brown Brothers Harriman is currently recruiting a Model Risk Senior Analyst to join the Enterprise Model Risk Management (EMRM) team. EMRM is a multi-disciplinary team within Operational Risk that uses applied concepts in econometrics, financial forecasting, balance sheet management, capital liquidity, and financial regulatory requirements management to evaluate firm-wide models, machine learning algorithms, and Gen-AI use cases. The team also plays a key role in the Firm's AI governance framework.
In this role you will be part of a dynamic team independently evaluating models supporting a variety of business activities such as anti-money laundering and sanctions compliance screening, financial and investment risk management, and Gen-AI-enabled processes. You will have the opportunity to work closely with business teams and technical support functions covering a broad range of activities and technologies, including high-profile strategic initiatives with exposure to senior leadership.
The role requires a detail-oriented and analytical thinker with a background in computer programming and/or mathematics with the knowledge and skills to decompose, evaluate, and interpret the functionality of various computational models. The position requires understanding of computer programming, quantitative modeling, and the ability to grasp risk management principles.
Some of your key responsibilities include:
- Lead and/or contribute to model validation engagements, including scoping, test planning, milestones, and stakeholder coordination.
- Design and execute validation testing to assess model performance and controls.
- Interpret testing results, identify issues, and develop clear, actionable observations and recommendations.
- Draft validation reports and executive summaries for senior audiences and Oversight Committees.
- Oversee tracking and monitoring of remediation activities.
- Ensure project documentation is consistent with EMRM standards for content, clarity, and auditability.
- Recommend enhancements to Model Risk policies, procedures, and standards.
- Contribute to evolving Gen-AI and LLM-focused model validation methodologies.
- Build effective working relationships across business, compliance, and technology teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3-6+ years of experience in computer science (or relevant field) Master's degree preferred;
- Demonstrated programming skills in languages such as Python, R, SQL for data modeling;
- Experience in data analysis techniques and metrics; knowledge of relational database technologies using SQL is a plus;
- Working knowledge with Python, R, SQL, or low/no-code/LLM tools for data modeling and/or large-scale data analysis projects;
- Strong writing and experience briefing technical findings.
What We Offer:
- A collaborative environment that enables you to step outside your role to add value wherever you can.
- Direct access to clients, information, and experts across all business areas around the world.
- Opportunities to grow your expertise, take on new challenges, and reinvent yourself-without leaving the firm.
- A culture of inclusion that values each employee's unique perspective.
- High-quality benefits program emphasizing good health, financial security, and peace of mind.
- Rewarding work with the flexibility to enjoy personal and family experiences at every career stage.
- Volunteer opportunities to give back to your community and help transform the lives of others.
