What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Model Based Systems Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Model Based Systems Engineering Intern, you generally need a background in systems engineering, computer science, or a related field, along with a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals. Familiarity with modeling tools like SysML, MATLAB/Simulink, and requirements management systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you collaborate and convey complex ideas clearly. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately modeling and analyzing systems, ensuring project success and effective integration within multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Model Based Systems Engineering Internship vs Systems Engineering Internship?

AspectModel Based Systems Engineering InternshipSystems Engineering Internship
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in engineering, systems engineering, or related fieldsSimilar educational background, often with emphasis on engineering or technical degrees
Work EnvironmentInvolves working with modeling tools, simulation software, and system design platformsFocuses on system integration, testing, and requirements analysis, often with less emphasis on modeling tools
Industry UsageCommon in aerospace, defense, automotive, and complex systems industriesWidely used across various engineering sectors including aerospace, manufacturing, and IT

Model Based Systems Engineering Internship specifically emphasizes modeling and simulation of systems using specialized tools, whereas Systems Engineering Internship covers broader system design, integration, and analysis tasks. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in technical focus and daily activities.

What is a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Internship?

A Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in applying MBSE principles and tools within an engineering or technology-focused organization. Interns typically work alongside experienced engineers to develop, analyze, and manage system models that represent complex engineering projects. They learn to use MBSE software to streamline system design, improve communication among stakeholders, and enhance documentation. This internship helps bridge academic learning with real-world engineering practices, preparing participants for future roles in systems engineering.

What kinds of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) internship?

As an MBSE intern, you will typically work on projects involving the development and analysis of system models using specialized tools such as SysML or MATLAB/Simulink. Your daily tasks may include supporting the creation of system architecture diagrams, updating model documentation, assisting with requirements traceability, and collaborating with engineering teams to ensure model accuracy. Interns often participate in design reviews, contribute to model validation and verification activities, and gain exposure to cross-disciplinary collaboration, which helps build a strong foundation for a career in systems engineering.

Job description

Job Requisition ID #
26WD94900
About The Team:
You will work with a cross-functional team within Autodesk Research, including members of the Simulation, Optimization and Systems (SOS), Industry Futures, and Engineering organizations. Together, the team explores the future of product design for Autodesk's Design & Manufacturing customers, bridging research, advanced engineering, and real-world workflows. As a member of the team, you will have access to state-of-the-art workshops and manufacturing expertise within the Autodesk Toronto Technology Centre.
About The Role:
As an Intern at Autodesk, you will be immersed in driving and owning projects that directly impact our customers, internal teams, or core products. You'll work alongside cross functional teams and mentors within Autodesk Research, gaining hands-on experience to further drive personal growth. In this role you will investigate and prototype a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach tailored for the conceptual design of small-scale mechanical assemblies. The intern will explore integration of MBSE practices with computational geometry, AI/ML methods, and CAD/CAM workflows to improve early design fidelity.
Responsibilities:
  • Having a dedicated mentor who will help you navigate through Autodesk from Day 1 - all while showing you what it means to be an Autodesker!
  • Managing your project end-to-end, including research, project planning, implementation, and demonstration
  • Partnering with various cross-functional teams to solve critical problems across the Autodesk organization
  • Combine your knowledge of Model Based Systems Engineering and state-of-the-art AI tools to create proof-of-concept prototypes and demonstrations
  • Managing incomplete, ambiguous, or evolving requirements during early concept development
  • Adapt MBSE processes traditionally used for large-scale systems to smaller assemblies while maintaining design fidelity
  • Integration of your output into broader team initiatives
  • Acting as an MBSE reference for the team and providing guidance with respect to the products being studied
  • Document research findings, prototypes, and lessons learned for future reference

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree program in Systems Engineering or Model Based Systems Engineering (Must be currently enrolled in a full-time, degree seeking program)
  • Proven track record with managing projects and challenges
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including assembly design and kinematic analysis
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with software development for prototyping
  • Exposure to AI/ML concepts and experience using AI tools for software development or prototyping
  • Experience with CAD/CAM and reverse engineering
  • Understanding of product design, manufacturing processes, and design-for-assembly principles
  • Systems Engineering & MBSE
  • Familiarity with SysML
  • Understanding of quantitative trade-off methods (Multi-Attribute Utility Theory, Pareto analysis)
  • Experience using Modelica, MATLAB, or similar tools for systems analysis
  • Practical experience applying model-based systems engineering principles to product design

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience from internships, extracurriculars, or other side projects
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams
  • Passion for Autodesk and/or desire to learn more about the domain
  • Doctoral degree program in Systems Engineering or Model Based Systems Engineering
  • Experience operating advanced manufacturing equipment (i.e. CNC mill, 3D-scanner, CMM, 3d printers)
  • Experience designing assemblies and product development processes
  • Well versed in implementing MBSE frameworks and system architectures
