Mobile Slam Engineer information

What is a mobile SLAM engineer?

A Mobile SLAM Engineer is a professional who specializes in developing and implementing Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithms for mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, or robots. SLAM is a technology that enables devices to map their environment and track their location in real-time, which is essential for applications like augmented reality, robotics, and autonomous navigation. Mobile SLAM Engineers work on optimizing these algorithms for resource-constrained platforms, ensuring they run efficiently and accurately on mobile hardware. Their work often involves software development, sensor integration, and testing in real-world environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile SLAM engineer?

To thrive as a Mobile SLAM Engineer, you need a strong background in computer vision, robotics, and mathematics, typically supported by a relevant engineering or computer science degree. Expertise in programming languages such as C++ and Python, along with proficiency in SLAM frameworks (e.g., ORB-SLAM, RTAB-Map) and experience with tools like ROS and OpenCV, is commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help you collaborate across interdisciplinary teams and tackle complex technical challenges. These skills and qualifications are crucial for developing robust, real-time localization and mapping solutions essential to mobile robotics and AR/VR applications.

What are some common challenges mobile SLAM engineers face when deploying algorithms on resource-constrained devices?

Mobile SLAM Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing algorithm efficiency to run in real-time on devices with limited processing power and memory. Balancing accuracy and computational load is crucial, as robust SLAM performance can be resource-intensive. Additionally, engineers must address issues like sensor noise, environmental variability, and battery consumption, all while ensuring reliable localization and mapping. Close collaboration with hardware teams and software optimization specialists is often necessary to overcome these challenges.

We unite caring with discovery to help make life better for people around the world, knowing that every decision, every detail, and every day matters. Headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, our over 50,000 employees around the globe take on complex challenges to discover and deliver life-changing medicines, strengthen how health is understood and managed, and support the communities we serve. This is hard, urgent, selfless work—but it’s work worth doing. If you’re driven by purpose and ready to bring your best to work that truly matters for patients, we invite you to join us.

At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We're looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.

Organization and Position Overview

Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.

The Engineer - Automation Engineering (AGV/AMR) will work as a member of the Automation Engineering Department at Eli Lilly, Foundry. The engineer will provide automation support for the site's Autonomous Guided Vehicle (AGV) and Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) fleets, which move materials, intermediates, and finished goods across manufacturing, warehouse, and utility areas. Process Automation is core to delivering a right first time facility start up and continued support of ongoing manufacturing operations into the future.

The Engineer is also responsible for the productivity and mentorship of the employees with the purpose of ensuring that reliable and compliant automated material handling systems are used in the manufacturing at Foundry. Additionally, the Engineer serves as a key technical resource, partnering with material handling vendors, System Integrators, warehouse operations, and other automation disciplines (Utilities, BMS, Tank Farm) to influence and implement the AGV/AMR fleet management strategy across the site.

In the project delivery phase and startup phase of the project (startup expected 2025 to 2028), automation engineering roles will be fluid and dynamic as we endeavor to support the project delivery, build a new organization, develop and implement the necessary systems and business processes required to support GMP operations, and build the site culture. This will require significant collaboration, creativity and resilience as the site grows to a full scale GMP manufacturing through start up.

Responsibilities Key Objectives/Deliverables
  • Technical Leadership
  • Mentor process control and material handling team members, including design, controls philosophy, implementation and commissioning of AGV/AMR systems
  • AGV/AMR fleet management software implementation and coordination
  • Develop and implement the Automation Engineering Project Plan for AGV/AMR deployment.
Operational Excellence
  • Technically lead and oversee the work of Site Area leads and System Integrators for AGV/AMR fleet management systems including Functional Requirements, Design Specifications, fleet controller software, and Test Specifications
