What is a mobile mechanic?

A mobile mechanic is an auto mechanic who travels to customers and provides vehicle maintenance on-site, rather than in a garage. This service is becoming increasingly popular because of its convenience, allowing customers to save time and avoid towing charges. As a mobile mechanic you can provide most of the services that are available in a garage, which includes electrical maintenance, transmission service, engine repairs, air conditioning recharging, battery replacement, and brake repair. Many mobile mechanics work weekends and holidays.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile mechanic?

To thrive as a Mobile Mechanic, you need strong mechanical aptitude, diagnostic skills, and relevant certifications such as ASE or manufacturer-specific credentials. Familiarity with automotive diagnostic tools, repair software, and mobile invoicing systems is typically essential. Excellent customer service, time management, and problem-solving abilities set standout professionals apart. These skills ensure efficient, accurate repairs and foster trust with clients in a mobile, often unsupervised work environment.

What are some common challenges mobile mechanics face when working in the field, and how can they be managed?

Mobile mechanics often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, limited access to specialized tools, and working in less-than-ideal environments like parking lots or roadside locations. To manage these challenges, it’s important to stay organized, maintain a well-equipped service vehicle, and be adaptable when diagnosing and repairing vehicles on-site. Good communication skills are also essential for coordinating with clients and ensuring safety protocols are followed during every job.

  • Analyzing malfunctions and determining the necessary repairs for fire and emergency equipment. This includes, but is not limited to the chassis, body, water pumps, electrical components, and engines.
  • Operate and inspect this equipment and evaluate the best course of action to return the apparatus to a safe operating condition
  • Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using their own and company provided specialized tooling
  • Repair, rebuild, overhaul, and replace defective assemblies and components such as gauges, air fittings, plumbing lines and valves, hydraulic lines, various pumps, and basic engine components
  • Test repaired equipment to ensure operating efficiency and safety prior to releasing the apparatus for duty.
Requirements:

What we’re looking for:

  • Diesel mechanic experience, preferably with heavy duty or emergency vehicles
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to pass pre-employment screening

Who does well here:

Are you looking for work that keeps you in the field while still being supported by a clean, well organized shop and work that actually feels meaningful? Do steady hours and time with your family matter to you? Want to work on equipment that serves your local community, not just another fleet of box trucks? If that sounds like you, Atlantic Emergency Solutions may be the right next step.
