Mobile Maintenance Reliability Engineer information

What is a mobile maintenance reliability engineer?

A Mobile Maintenance Reliability Engineer is a professional responsible for ensuring the reliability and optimal performance of mobile equipment, such as vehicles and machinery, in industries like mining, construction, or manufacturing. Their main focus is on analyzing equipment data, identifying patterns of failure, and implementing maintenance strategies to minimize downtime and improve efficiency. They often work closely with operations and maintenance teams to develop predictive and preventative maintenance programs. By applying engineering principles and data analysis, they help organizations reduce costs and maximize the lifespan of mobile assets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile maintenance reliability engineer?

To thrive as a Mobile Maintenance Reliability Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical or electrical engineering, experience in equipment maintenance, and a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), reliability analysis tools, and certification such as Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for minimizing equipment downtime, optimizing maintenance processes, and ensuring safe, efficient operations.

What are some typical challenges faced by mobile maintenance reliability engineers when working with diverse equipment fleets?

Mobile Maintenance Reliability Engineers often encounter challenges related to managing a wide variety of equipment types and ages within a fleet, which can complicate the implementation of standardized maintenance strategies. Adapting predictive and preventive maintenance schedules to suit each asset’s unique operational demands requires strong analytical skills and coordination with operations and maintenance teams. Additionally, balancing immediate repair needs with long-term reliability improvements is a common challenge, as is ensuring effective communication between field technicians and engineering teams to identify and resolve recurring issues.

What is the difference between Mobile Maintenance Reliability Engineer vs Maintenance Technician?

AspectMobile Maintenance Reliability EngineerMaintenance Technician
CertificationsReliability, maintenance, or engineering certifications; often includes certifications like CMRT or Certified Reliability EngineerTrade certifications, HVAC, electrical, or mechanical licenses
Work EnvironmentField-based, focusing on equipment reliability, predictive maintenance, and troubleshootingHands-on repair and maintenance of machinery, often on-site or in workshops
Industry UsageManufacturing, energy, oil & gas, and industrial sectorsManufacturing plants, facilities, and industrial sites

The Mobile Maintenance Reliability Engineer focuses on improving equipment reliability through predictive and preventive strategies, often working remotely or in the field. In contrast, Maintenance Technicians perform direct repairs and routine maintenance. Both roles are essential in industrial settings but differ in scope and responsibilities.

We are seeking an experienced and professional Reliability & Lubrication Technologist to join Tolko's corporate Maintenance & Reliability team. Working collaboratively with trades, reliability engineers, planners, and operations across the organization, you will help ensure equipment is designed, maintained, lubricated, and operated for long-term reliability and performance. This role can be based out of any location we have an office or operating facility. Strong relationships are built onsite, and this role involves up to 70% travel, depending on which Tolko office you call home.
Our ideal candidate has the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 8–15 years in industrial fluid power systems or heavy-duty equipment with a proven track record.
  • Red Seal Millwright, Heavy Duty Mechanic, or Industrial Maintenance Technician OR a diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering (applied focus).
  • 5 to 10 years of experience in industrial maintenance, reliability, lubrication, condition monitoring, or asset management, with a demonstrated record of improving equipment performance and reliability.

  •  Demonstrated experience identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving recurring equipment reliability issues.

  • Experience supporting hydraulic and pneumatic systems, centralized lubrication systems, rotating equipment, and industrial production assets is preferred.

  • Machinery Lubrication Technician (MLT) or Machinery Lubrication Analyst (MLA) certification is preferred.

  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Technician (CMRT), vibration analysis, thermography, or ultrasound inspection certification is considered an asset.

  • Formal training in Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM), Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), or related reliability methodologies is preferred.

  •  Advanced hydraulic and pneumatic systems troubleshooting training and certification is preferred; Certified Fluid Power Specialist (CFPS) is considered an asset.

We value diversity at Tolko and respect that experience, and knowledge come in many forms.  Even if you don't think you check every box, please apply. We would love to hear your story and have you grow with us.
In this role, you will:

  •  Diagnose and resolve chronic and high-impact equipment failures using reliability and failure-mode analysis.
  •  Lead root cause investigations and develop corrective actions that prevent repeat failures.
  •  Improve maintenance strategies through reliability assessments, asset criticality reviews, and predictive and preventive maintenance programs.
  •  Analyze equipment and condition data to identify risks and proactive maintenance opportunities.
  •  Lead Tolko’s lubrication program by developing standards and improving lubricant selection, storage, handling, application, and contamination control.
  •  Conduct lubrication audits and support oil analysis, lubricant optimization, consolidation, and cost-reduction initiatives.
  •  Provide technical expertise for hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including troubleshooting, commissioning, upgrades, and reliability improvements.
  •  Support condition monitoring using vibration analysis, oil analysis, thermography, ultrasound, and other predictive technologies.
  •  Develop and standardize reliability practices across Tolko operations, including equipment, fluid power, maintenance, and asset management standards.
  •  Partner with site teams to provide training, share knowledge, and drive sustainable reliability improvements.

So, what’s in it for you?

  • You’ll take on an exciting challenge with supportive team members.
  • You’ll earn a competitive salary based on your skills and experience. The expected base salary range for this position is $135,000 to $150,000 per year.
  • You will be eligible to participate in Tolko’s bonus program.
  • Competitive benefits and retirement plans come standard, so you don’t have to choose between your bottom line and your wellbeing or your future.
  • Relocation support including community connections so you can live (and play) where you work.
  • Continued professional development through on the job and classroom training and reimbursement of tuition and membership fees.
  • positive, innovative, and inclusive work environment.
