Mobile Lab Assistant information

What is a mobile lab assistant?

Mobile Lab Assistants are professionals who travel to various locations, such as homes, clinics, or workplaces, to collect biological samples (like blood or urine), perform basic laboratory tests, and sometimes assist with setting up mobile laboratory equipment. Their work ensures that individuals who cannot visit a traditional lab still have access to essential diagnostic services. Mobile Lab Assistants must follow strict protocols to ensure sample integrity and patient safety, and they often communicate results back to healthcare providers. The role requires attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work independently while maintaining patient confidentiality.

What does a mobile lab assistant do?

As a Mobile Lab Assistant, your daily responsibilities usually include traveling to various sites to collect samples, perform basic tests, and ensure the secure transport of specimens back to the main laboratory. Unlike traditional lab assistants who work in a fixed location, mobile lab assistants must adapt to different environments, maintain strict protocols while on the road, and communicate effectively with both patients and lab staff. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while representing the lab in the field.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a mobile lab assistant?

To thrive as a Mobile Lab Assistant, you need a background in laboratory techniques, specimen collection, and familiarity with basic scientific procedures, often supported by a high school diploma or associate degree in a science-related field. Experience with mobile lab equipment, sample tracking systems, and adherence to safety protocols are typically required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication help you stand out when interacting with patients and managing logistics. These skills ensure accurate test results, safe handling of specimens, and efficient service delivery in various locations.

Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for roles in mobile health settingsMore clinical and laboratory-focused

The Mobile Lab Assistant and Medical Laboratory Technician roles share similarities in working within healthcare environments and requiring some healthcare-related credentials. However, Mobile Lab Assistants typically work in mobile or remote settings with less formal laboratory training, while Medical Laboratory Technicians have more advanced technical skills and certifications for clinical lab work. Both roles are essential in healthcare diagnostics but differ mainly in scope, environment, and required qualifications.

Can you get a mobile lab assistant job with no experience?

Mobile lab assistant positions often require minimal prior experience, and employers may provide on-the-job training. Having basic knowledge of laboratory procedures, good communication skills, and a willingness to learn can help you qualify for entry-level roles without previous experience.

Job description

We’re looking for a hands-on Lab Engineer to join the networking device development team responsible for Evertz IP switch fabric products, including the EXE and NATX, and Evertz SDI router products, including the NEXX and ENX platforms. In this role, you’ll keep our development lab running smoothly — managing device wiring, maintaining hardware inventory, and supporting the CI/CD infrastructure that the engineering team relies on daily. This is a fully on-site position (5 days per week) given the hands-on nature of the work.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and organize network, audio, video, and fiber optic cabling across lab and small-scale data center environments.
  • Rewire and reconfigure devices based on engineering requests, test plans, and project demands.
  • Install, replace, and decommission lab devices including switches, servers, and AV networking equipment.
  • Handle and troubleshoot optical transceivers (SFP/SFP+ and QSFP/QSFP-DD), including installation, swapping, and verifying link status.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory database of all data center devices, cabling, and port assignments.
  • Develop and maintain support utility scripts in Python and Bash to streamline lab operations and support remote access to lab devices.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the team’s Jenkins CI infrastructure as needed, including updating Jenkins packages and plugins, maintaining build scripts (Python/Bash), and occasional triage of build failures. This responsibility is shared across the team based on workload and availability.
Qualifications:
  • Diploma or degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Networking, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1–2 years of experience with Python and Bash scripting.
  • Basic understanding of networking concepts (Ethernet, IP addressing, VLANs, cable types) and the ability to work with structured cabling, including copper and fiber optic.
  • Familiarity with audio/video cabling, connectors, and optical transceivers (SFP/QSFP) used in broadcast or AV environments is an asset.
  • Experience with Jenkins or similar CI/CD tools.
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on lab setting, including racking/unracking equipment, managing cables, and troubleshooting physical connectivity.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for maintaining accurate inventory and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks based on engineering team needs.
  • A willingness to learn new technologies and take ownership of improving existing designs, processes, and tools for the betterment of the product and the team.
Nice to Have:
  • Exposure to broadcast networking, SDI, and SMPTE ST 2110 environments.
  • Basic awareness of PTP (Precision Time Protocol) and its role in broadcast timing and synchronization.
  • Experience with network device configuration or management tools.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (Git, Subversion).
  • CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Linux+, or similar industry certifications.

What we offer:

  • Employer funded benefits program
  • Competitive total compensation package
  • Work-Life Balance
  • Employee assistance plan
  • Employee Discount Platform
  • Career Progression
  • Casual Work Environment
  • Social Events and Sports Teams

Location: Markham, Ontario
Hours: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week
Vacancy: This is a newly created position
