What Does a Mobile Game Developer Do?

As a mobile game developer, your job is to help program a game app for people to use on a phone, tablet, or another mobile game player. In this role, you may help set up the intended user experience, coordinate with content providers, and test the software to ensure that all aspects function as intended. Many of the duties and responsibilities of this job depend on the employer. For example, some mobile game developers perform almost all tasks, while others focus on specific parts of the software in order to help maximize content delivery speeds. Many people in this industry work out of offices, but it is possible to work as a remote mobile game developer, especially if you have a high-speed internet connection that can support large game file transfers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mobile Game Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like C#, C++, or Java), a solid grasp of game design principles, and experience with mobile platforms, typically supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, and knowledge of version control systems like Git, are standard technical requirements. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills that help deliver engaging user experiences and overcome development challenges. These abilities are crucial for producing high-quality, innovative games that perform well in a competitive and rapidly evolving market.

What are some common challenges Mobile Game Developers face when optimizing games for different devices?

Mobile Game Developers often encounter challenges in ensuring their games run smoothly across a wide variety of devices with different screen sizes, operating systems, and hardware capabilities. Balancing high-quality graphics with performance, especially on lower-end devices, requires careful optimization and thorough testing. Developers also need to stay updated with frequent OS updates and new device releases, which can affect game compatibility and user experience. Collaboration with designers and QA testers is crucial to address these challenges effectively.

Job description

The Media Trust is on a mission to make the digital ecosystem a healthier, more valuable place for businesses, governments and consumers. Working with the world's largest, most-heavily trafficked digital publishers and their AdTech partners as well as enterprises, the Media Trust delivers real-time security, data protection, performance management and quality assurance solutions that help protect, monetize and optimize the user experience across desktop, smartphone, tablet and gaming devices. The Media Trust is an industry pioneer with 20 years of history continuously monitoring the online and mobile ecosystem.

We are seeking a Senior Mobile App Software Developer with strong full-stack and Ad Tech experience to build and scale advertising-driven products across mobile and web platforms. This role owns user-facing experiences end-to-end-from mobile apps and Web UIs to backend services and ad integrations-while maintaining performance, reliability, and scalability.

You'll be a key technical leader on our product engineering team, architecting solutions that directly impact millions of users while working with cutting-edge advertising technology. Experience with monetization strategy and yield optimization is preferred but not required.

As an organization, we prize engineering professionals who are equipped with great technical skills and attitudes that motivate those around them. We seek individuals who bring a sense of ownership and are passionate about quality. We value individuals who are curious, demonstrate initiative, and love solving problems.

What You'll Do

  • Architect and develop end-to-end solutions across mobile apps (Swift, Kotlin, React Native, Flutter), modern Web UIs (React), and backend systems that serve millions of users daily.
  • Lead mobile and web UI development, integrating advertising experiences (Google Ad Manager, AdMob, MoPub, AppLovin, ironSource, Unity Ads, Meta Audience Network) that balance exceptional UX, optimal performance, and revenue generation.
  • Design and build scalable backend services, APIs, and data pipelines supporting ad delivery, analytics, and reporting while optimizing for low-latency, high-throughput workloads.
  • Own full-stack features from requirements through deployment, making architectural decisions around scalability, reliability, and security while building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and cloud infrastructure.
  • Collaborate across teams (product, design, data, monetization) and conduct code reviews to mentor engineers, raise engineering standards, and deliver innovative solutions that drive business outcomes.
  • Solve hard problems with creative solutions and have a good time along the way!

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience with proven delivery of production mobile and web applications at scale, including strong expertise in mobile front-end development (Swift, Kotlin, React Native, Flutter) and modern Web UI development with React, JavaScript/TypeScript, state management, and performance optimization.
  • Required hands-on Ad Tech experience with mobile advertising SDKs, mediation platforms, and ad lifecycle management, plus direct experience with one or more ad platforms such as Google Ad Manager (GAM), AdMob, MoPub, AppLovin, ironSource, Unity Ads, or Meta Audience Network.
  • Demonstrated full-stack engineering expertise including backend development (Node.js, Java, Python, Go), API design (REST/GraphQL), databases (SQL and NoSQL such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB), event tracking, analytics pipelines, and microservices architecture.
  • Strong system design and cloud platform experience (AWS, GCP, or Azure) with ability to architect scalable, low-latency solutions that handle high volume and large-scale data, plus understanding of Agile development methodologies.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT or related field (equivalent experience/training will be considered) and excellent communication skills to clearly describe complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

While the above are core requirements, the follow specialized experience is highly desirable:

  • Experience with monetization strategy, yield optimization, or revenue analytics including familiarity with ad performance metrics (eCPM, fill rate, ARPDAU, CTR, viewability) and exposure to programmatic advertising or RTB.
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience (Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK) and prior technical leadership or mentorship experience with track record of guiding and developing engineering talent.
  • Experience with A/B testing frameworks, web application security (XSS, SQL injection), understanding of malware/malvertising threats, or knowledge of privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA) and their impact on mobile advertising.
