Will AI replace game devs?

As a mobile game developer, AI is a tool that can assist with tasks like procedural content generation and testing, but it is unlikely to fully replace human developers. Developers who adapt by learning AI tools and programming will continue to be valuable in the industry.

What is the 80 20 rule in game development?

The 80/20 rule in game development suggests that approximately 80% of the game's value comes from 20% of its features or content. Mobile game developers often focus on optimizing this core 20% to improve user engagement and retention efficiently.

Is 30 too old to start game development?

Mobile game development is accessible to individuals of all ages, and many successful developers start later in life. Skills such as programming, design, and familiarity with tools like Unity or Unreal Engine can be learned at any age, and experience from other fields can be an asset in game development careers.

What does a Mobile Game Developer do?

A Mobile Game Developer is responsible for designing, building, testing, and maintaining games for mobile platforms such as iOS and Android. They use programming languages like C#, Java, or Swift along with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine. In addition to coding, they often collaborate with artists, designers, and other team members to create engaging and interactive gaming experiences. Their work also includes optimizing games for performance on various devices and implementing features like in-app purchases or social integration.

What are some common challenges Mobile Game Developers face when optimizing games for different devices?

Mobile Game Developers often encounter challenges in ensuring their games run smoothly across a wide variety of devices with different screen sizes, operating systems, and hardware capabilities. Balancing high-quality graphics with performance, especially on lower-end devices, requires careful optimization and thorough testing. Developers also need to stay updated with frequent OS updates and new device releases, which can affect game compatibility and user experience. Collaboration with designers and QA testers is crucial to address these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mobile Game Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Game Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like C#, C++, or Java), a solid grasp of game design principles, and experience with mobile platforms, typically supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine, and knowledge of version control systems like Git, are standard technical requirements. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills that help deliver engaging user experiences and overcome development challenges. These abilities are crucial for producing high-quality, innovative games that perform well in a competitive and rapidly evolving market.

What Does a Mobile Game Developer Do?

In this role, you may help set up the intended user experience, coordinate with content providers, and test the software to ensure that all aspects function as intended. Many of the duties and responsibilities of this job depend on the employer. For example, some mobile game developers perform almost all tasks, while others focus on specific parts of the software in order to help maximize content delivery speeds. Many people in this industry work out of offices, but it is possible to work as a remote mobile game developer, especially if you have a high-speed internet connection that can support large game file transfers.

Job description

Company Name: IG US Holdings, Inc.
Role: Senior Product Manager, Core Experience
Location: Chicago, IL - Hybrid (3 days/week in office)

Our Product Team manages the portfolio of features and enhancements that power tastytrade, guiding each initiative from initial concept through discovery, build, deployment, and continuous improvement. We're hiring a Senior Product Manager to own the foundation every tastytrade customer touches - the core platform experience across mobile, web, and desktop including onboarding, discovery, and the connections between our vertical trading products.

This role reports into the Lead Product Manager and is a high-visibility role with real platform ownership and significant cross-functional influence. tastytrade's product org is actively growing, and this role is part of that build. You'll have the opportunity to help shape not just the core platform experience, but the ways of working and sharing conventions that scale with the team.

What You'll Do:

Own the customer journey

  • Own critical experiences and feature builds to support onboarding, fraud and account security, funding flows, and account management.

Set platform standards

  • Partner with design and engineering to establish the navigation patterns, shared UI components, and design conventions that create a consistent experience across tastytrade's products and platforms.
  • Own accessibility standards as a platform-level commitment, ensuring shared components, navigation frameworks, and onboarding flows meet or exceed WCAG guidelines.

Drive measurable business outcomes:

  • Develop product strategy that translates business vision into executable plans, using data-driven frameworks to measure impact through OKRs and KPIs - with particular focus on activation rates, funding conversion, feature discoverability, and cross-sell.
  • Build business cases with ROI projections and conduct market research to inform strategic direction.
  • Define the metrics that matter for platform health and customer progression and hold yourself accountable to them.

Navigate complexity and stakeholder relationships

  • Operate as the connective tissue between vertical product teams (equities, options, futures, FX, etc.) and the broader organization -helping resolve prioritization conflicts, contributing to shared conventions, and ensuring that platform-level decisions serve both the business and end customers well.
  • Communicate confidently with executive stakeholders while effectively translating between technical and business perspectives.

Leverage emerging technologies

  • Use AI and emerging technologies to enhance product capabilities and solve customer problems more effectively - from smarter onboarding personalization to intelligent cross-sell surfaces and proactive account management tools.
  • Establish monitoring strategies to ensure ongoing adherence to performance, security, and reliability requirements for post-launch.

Who You Are:

6+ years of product management experience with demonstrated success driving complex, cross-functional product initiatives on multi-PM teams
         Consumer Experience & Discovery:

  • Deep expertise in consumer-facing experiences that span mobile and web, with a strong point of view on navigation, information architecture, onboarding, and product discovery and design. You've thought hard about how customers progress through a product over time, not just how they use it in a single session

    Strong technical and commercial acumen:
  • you can define comprehensive non-functional requirements and work in lockstep with engineering teams while building business cases and tracking financial metrics tied to product performance

Proficiency with advanced PM methods and emerging technologies:
  • Skilled with prototyping, A/B testing, advanced analytics, and road mapping platforms, with experience leveraging AI and machine learning to optimize product capabilities
    Excellent communication and collaboration skills:
  • Able to tailor messaging to diverse stakeholders from engineers to executives, with a track record of influencing without authority across teams with competing priorities
  • Passion for empowering individual traders and improving the trading experience through data-driven insights and strategic decision-making
    Strongly Preferred Experience:
  • Experience in fintech or an adjacent regulated industry (e.g. insurance, gaming) or retail trading, brokerage operations, or financial markets technology is a meaningful advantage - you understand that platform decisions carry compliance and operational weight, not just UX tradeoffs

Company Perks + Benefits:

  • Performance Bonuses
  • Stock Purchase Options
  • Medical/Vision/Dental Benefits
  • 401k Plan
  • Annual educational / conference stipend
  • 20 Paid Vacation Days (plus an additional paid vacation day the month of your birthday!)
  • 10 Paid Sick Days
  • Gym Membership Reimbursement
  • Commuter Benefits
  • Pet Insurance
  • Wellness & Mental Health Programs
  • Charitable Donation Matching
  • Two Paid Volunteer Days Off
  • Daily catered lunch when in the office
  • Full kitchen with snacks and beverages
  • In-building gym
  • Shuttle to/from Metra
  • Office located in the West Loop - Chicago's growing center of tech, great cuisine, and high-end bars

Base Salary Range: $150,000 - $190,000
The actual salary offered will be based on the candidate's level of experience and qualifications.

Discretionary Performance Bonus: 15-20% of base salary based on individual and company performance.
