Mobile Boring Machine Operator information

What is a mobile boring machine operator?

Mobile Boring Machine Operators are skilled workers who operate specialized machinery used to bore holes into materials like soil, rock, or concrete at construction or mining sites. These machines are often mobile, allowing operators to move them to different locations as needed. Operators are responsible for setting up, maintaining, and safely running the equipment to create precise holes for foundations, tunnels, or utilities. They must carefully follow safety standards and technical plans to ensure accurate and efficient work. The role often requires mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile boring machine operator?

To thrive as a Mobile Boring Machine Operator, you need strong mechanical aptitude, experience with heavy machinery, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with CNC controls, measuring tools, and safety protocols is essential, and some positions may require OSHA or equipment-specific certifications. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team help operators excel. These skills ensure precise, safe, and efficient operation of boring machines, which is critical for meeting project specifications and workplace safety standards.

What are some common challenges faced by mobile boring machine operators on job sites?

Mobile Boring Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as working in confined or uneven spaces, adapting to varying soil or material conditions, and maintaining precision while operating heavy machinery. Ensuring safety while working near other crews and equipment is crucial, as is troubleshooting mechanical issues that may arise during drilling or boring operations. Effective communication with supervisors and other team members helps address these challenges and keeps projects on schedule.

What is the difference between Mobile Boring Machine Operator vs Horizontal Boring Machine Operator?

AspectMobile Boring Machine OperatorHorizontal Boring Machine Operator
CredentialsTypically requires specialized certifications in machinery operationSimilar certifications often required, focusing on horizontal boring equipment
Work EnvironmentOperates on construction sites, often outdoors and mobileWorks in industrial or construction settings, often stationary or semi-mobile
Industry UsageCommon in construction, tunneling, and infrastructure projectsUsed in manufacturing, pipeline installation, and large-scale construction

Both roles involve operating boring machinery, but Mobile Boring Machine Operators typically work on-site with mobile equipment, while Horizontal Boring Machine Operators focus on stationary or semi-mobile horizontal boring tasks. The choice depends on the project type and equipment used.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Manual Turn & Mill Operator is responsible for setting up and operating conventional manual lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders, and related equipment to manufacture, repair, and modify precision components. This position requires a strong understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, precision measurement, and shop mathematics. The ideal candidate is beyond entry level and can work independently with minimal supervision, troubleshoot machining issues, maintain quality standards, and assist in training less experienced operators.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set up and operate manual lathes, milling machines, drill presses, surface grinders, and other conventional machine shop equipment.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, work instructions, and specifications to determine machining requirements and tolerances.
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, cutting speeds, and feeds based on material and job requirements.
  • Machine components from various materials including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, plastics, and specialty alloys.
  • Perform turning, facing, boring, threading, drilling, tapping, reaming, milling, slotting, and keyway operations.
  • Inspect finished and in-process parts using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators, thread gauges, and height gauges.
  • Maintain dimensional accuracy and ensure components meet quality and customer specifications.
  • Identify and troubleshoot machining, tooling, and dimensional issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform machine adjustments and routine preventive maintenance to ensure equipment reliability.
  • Calculate dimensions, tolerances, cutting parameters, and material requirements using shop mathematics.
  • Complete production records, inspection documentation, and work orders accurately.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, quality standards, and housekeeping requirements.
  • Assist with fixture development and process improvements to enhance productivity and quality.
  • Support training and mentoring of junior machinists and machine operators.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, maintenance, and production personnel to resolve manufacturing concerns.
  • Maintain an organized and safe work environment in accordance with 5S and lean manufacturing principles.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Technical school or machining apprenticeship completion.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience in relevant machine operating roles.
  • Experience in operating manual lathes and mills.
  • Experience with prototype, repair, tool room, or low-volume production work.
  • Welding, fabrication, or CNC machining experience.
  • Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement experience.
  • Proven skills in soldering or brazing
  • Experience with manual, electric and hydraulic presses
  • Experience in bead blasting and finishing techniques

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough understanding of machining practices and metalworking processes.
  • Ability to work from drawings, sketches, samples, and verbal instructions.
  • Proficient in shop mathematics including geometry, trigonometry, and tolerance calculations.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Tasks such as lifting heavy materials, moving equipment, and operating machinery may require physical strength and stamina.
  • Machine shop workers often spend extended periods standing and walking within the shop floor, which can lead to fatigue and muscle strain.
  • Operating various tools and machinery in the shop, such as drills, lathes, and milling machines, may require repetitive motion and physical dexterity.
  • Working with industrial machinery in a machine shop can expose workers to high levels of noise and vibrations, which can potentially cause hearing damage and physical discomfort.
  • Machine shop workers may encounter various occupational hazards such as sharp tools, hot materials, and potentially dangerous equipment. Proper safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) are crucial for minimizing the risk of injury.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: A flexible work environment in a mixed office and machine shop workspace, provides a business casual atmosphere with white noise generators to help maintain a quiet work environment.
