Mobile Backend Developer information

What is a mobile backend developer?

A Mobile Backend Developer is a software engineer who specializes in creating and maintaining the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power mobile applications. Their work ensures that mobile apps can securely access data, perform complex operations, and communicate with other services. They typically use programming languages like Java, Python, Node.js, or Ruby, and are responsible for scalability, security, and performance of the backend systems that support mobile apps.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile backend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Backend Developer, you need strong skills in server-side programming languages (such as Node.js, Python, or Java), API design, and an understanding of mobile app architectures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or Google Cloud), RESTful APIs, database systems (SQL/NoSQL), and relevant certifications are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication help developers work efficiently within cross-functional teams. These competencies ensure robust, scalable, and secure backend systems that power seamless mobile app experiences.

What are some typical challenges mobile backend developers face when integrating with multiple mobile platforms?

Mobile Backend Developers often encounter challenges when ensuring their APIs and services are compatible with different mobile platforms, such as iOS and Android. Differences in data formats, authentication methods, and platform-specific limitations can require additional testing and adaptation. Collaboration with frontend mobile teams is crucial to address these issues early and to maintain smooth data flow and user experience across all platforms. Staying up-to-date with evolving mobile OS requirements is also key to minimizing integration issues.

What is the difference between Mobile Backend Developer vs Web Developer?

AspectMobile Backend DeveloperWeb Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in CS or related, knowledge of mobile backend frameworksBachelor's in CS or related, knowledge of web technologies
Work EnvironmentDevelops APIs and services for mobile apps, often in cloud environmentsBuilds websites and web applications, often in browser-based environments
Industry UsageMobile app companies, startups, tech firmsWeb development agencies, corporate websites, e-commerce
Search & Comparison IntentHigh overlap in backend skills, focus on mobile platformsFocus on web technologies, but similar backend skills

While both roles require backend development skills and similar credentials, Mobile Backend Developers specialize in creating APIs and services for mobile applications, often working with cloud platforms. Web Developers focus on building websites and web applications. The roles overlap in backend programming but differ in platform focus and user interface considerations.

Job description

At Bridgenext, we engineer Growth Operating Systems. Most enterprises have spent millions on their revenue stack and still aren't seeing the growth they expected. They have tools that function, but no system that wins. We help growth-hungry companies close that gap by turning fragmented platforms, siloed teams, and disconnected data into one integrated Growth OS. More than a technology company or marketing agency, we're a global digital consultancy with experts in engineering, data, AI, creative and more.

Our teams are made up of experts who believe in engineering impact, starting with putting people at the center of everything we do. Every team member directly shapes our work, culture, and values. Nothing matters more to us than a kind, respectful, fulfilling environment that supports everyone. Our flexible, inclusive culture gives you the autonomy, resources, and opportunities to thrive.

Bridgenext is seeking an experienced GIS Developer to design, develop, test, maintain, and enhance geospatial applications and data-management solutions supporting timberland, agriculture, natural resources, and broader land-management operations.

The role requires strong GIS development, spatial-data management, system-integration, automation, and modern web-development capabilities. The GIS Developer will build scalable solutions using the Esri ArcGIS platform, Python, SQL, Microsoft Azure services, and contemporary web technologies to support informed operational and investment decisions.

The successful candidate will collaborate with GIS Analysts, Business Analysts, land managers, forestry and agriculture professionals, Product Owners, and technology teams to translate complex geospatial requirements into secure, reliable, and user-focused solutions.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain GIS web applications, geospatial services, and supporting data solutions.
  • Build and support integrations between ArcGIS platforms and enterprise systems, including land-information management, forest operations, reporting, and environmental or safety platforms.
  • Develop and maintain ArcGIS geoprocessing tools, Python/ArcPy automation, scheduled workflows, REST APIs, and reusable services for spatial processing and resource-management activities.
  • Create, publish, administer, and optimize ArcGIS map services, feature services, geoprocessing services, image services, mobile data services, and offline map packages.
  • Develop interactive mapping and responsive GIS applications using JavaScript/TypeScript, React, and the ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, with appropriate authentication, authorization, and role-based access controls.
  • Support backend and full-stack development for GIS applications using modern APIs, web technologies, and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Manage and maintain enterprise geospatial datasets, parcel information, forest inventory, farmland and timberland boundaries, resource data, and related business attributes.
  • Support spatial editing workflows for harvesting, regeneration, dispositions, casualty loss, exclusion areas, acreage tracking, leases, inspections, and field operations.
  • Develop or support growth-and-yield modeling, forest-inventory analysis, spatial joins, overlays, and other geospatial analytics used in harvest planning and investment decisions.
  • Ensure spatial-data integrity and consistency across ArcGIS, enterprise geodatabases, integrated applications, and downstream reporting platforms through validation, verification, and reconciliation controls.
  • Write and optimize spatial SQL queries for Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL Managed Instance, including enterprise geodatabase administration, spatial indexing, reporting, migration, and domain management.
  • Develop and support big-data geospatial workflows using Databricks, PySpark, GeoPandas, Databricks Mosaic, ADLS Gen2, Delta Lake, and Parquet where applicable.
  • Develop solutions for mobile and offline field-data collection using ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, Collector, and custom field applications.
  • Support Azure Active Directory group synchronization, Single Sign-On, least-privilege access, ArcGIS Portal group governance, and periodic access reviews.
  • Participate in solution design, sprint planning, story refinement, estimation, testing, user acceptance, release activities, peer reviews, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues involving spatial data, map and feature services, application integrations, performance, valuations, reporting, and field workflows.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines and cloud-based deployments using GitHub, Jenkins, Azure DevOps or Harness, Artifactory, and related DevSecOps practices.

Workplace:  This is a remote working position open to candidates in the provinces of Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia supporting Eastern timeznoe working hours.
