What is a Mobile 5G Core Network?

A Mobile 5G Core Network is the central part of a 5G mobile telecommunications system that manages data, connectivity, and services for users. It is responsible for functions such as authentication, mobility management, session management, and secure access to external networks and services. The 5G Core supports advanced features like network slicing and low-latency communication, enabling new use cases such as IoT, autonomous vehicles, and enhanced mobile broadband. Compared to previous generations, the 5G Core is more flexible, cloud-native, and designed to handle massive amounts of data and connected devices.

What are the typical collaboration points between a Mobile 5G Core Network engineer and other telecom teams?

As a Mobile 5G Core Network engineer, you’ll frequently collaborate with radio access network (RAN) teams, security specialists, and network operations to ensure seamless end-to-end service delivery. You’ll work closely with software developers to integrate and test new core network functions and troubleshoot issues. Additionally, coordination with customer support and product management teams is common to address service quality concerns and plan network upgrades. This cross-functional environment encourages continuous learning and helps expand your expertise beyond core network technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mobile 5G Core Network engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Mobile 5G Core Network Engineer, you need a solid background in telecommunications, networking protocols (such as TCP/IP, SCTP), and relevant degrees in computer science or electrical engineering. Expertise with 5G core network components (like AMF, SMF, UPF), virtualization technologies, and certifications such as Cisco, Nokia, or Ericsson are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for addressing network issues and collaborating across departments. These skills are vital for ensuring reliable, secure, and high-performance 5G network operations in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Job description

GRID Networks is seeking a Chief Mobile Technology Officer to lead our mobile team. This role owns the mobile network end to end — architecture, vendor strategy, deployment, and daily operations. You'll lead a distributed engineering and operations team and be the technical authority on signaling, voice, SMS, data services, international roaming, commercial operator agreements, and general mobile industry topics. You will lead across the full lifecycle of mobile related products and services from early architecture through production.

What You'll Do

  • Architecture & Strategy — Set the roadmap for network capability, vendor selection, and evolution of core network functions.
  • Infrastructure — Oversee core network, data centers, virtualized infrastructure, IPX services – all the infrastructure that makes the mobile network operate.
  • Operations — Own network operations and engineering end to end — performance optimization, capacity planning, trouble resolution, maintenance, and QoS/KPI tracking.
  • Roaming and Services — Set roaming strategy and manage international agreements, including IREG/TADIG testing, interconnect agreements, and mobile oriented commercial agreements such as IMSI and MSISDN leasing, SMS and voice service providers.
  • Vendor Relationships — Negotiate contracts / manage delivery with major telecom equipment vendors.
  • Team Leadership — Lead a distributed engineering and operations team; align domestic and international groups on priorities and execution.
  • Innovation — Track emerging technologies that could improve network performance or reduce operating cost.

What You'll Bring

  • 10+ years in telecommunications, with hands-on ownership of mobile network technologies.
  • 5+ years leading engineering teams spanning both operations and engineering.
  • Deep knowledge of mobile technology and services across generations (2G–5G and beyond).
  • Fluency in mobile related signaling protocols including SS7/MAP and Diameter signaling.
  • Expert knowledge of ITU-T and 3GPP specifications and GSMA recommendations.
  • Detailed knowledge of mobile data services, SMS, SMS hubs, and voice network concepts.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field.
  • Strategic thinker, clear communicator, and a collaborative leader and mentor.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels within the organization and externally with customers and partners.
