Job description

Amentum is seeking an Able Seaman for a position on Kauai, HI.

The Able Seaman (AB) is a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) crew position aboard assigned US NAVY Range Support Craft for the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) at Barking Sands, HI. The AB is a junior deck position holding a current US Coast Guard MMC for National Able Seaman - SPECIAL (or greater) and works under the direction of a USCG licensed vessel Master and the Koa Lani Marine Systems Supervisor. The AB works at sea in various weather conditions primarily off the west coast of the Island of Kauai within the PMRF Barking Sands submarine training range. When in port, the AB performs daily operational tasks and general maintenance for assigned vessels and support equipment under the direction of the boat captains or other designated senior crewpersons. Additional tasks performed by the AB may be required on shore facilities, assigned small boats, shop equipment and special projects.

Responsibilities

Specific assignments and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following areas:

  • Performs as a junior crewperson in a crew of 6 (+/-) team members on 95-foot NAVY Range Training Support Craft

  • Works in team environment under supervision of the Master, Mate or other senior personnel receiving technical guidance as required.

  • Stands bridge, helm, lookout, and vessel security watches while vessel is underway.

  • Performs general preventative and corrective maintenance, corrosion control, housekeeping tasks, scraping, painting, scrubbing and swabbing decks, maintenance of interior and exterior spaces.

  • Performs specialized marine and shore-based tasks in support of operations and fleet training, departmental errands, HAZMAT control functions.

  • Assists with launch and recovery of oceanographic equipment, small boats, targets, torpedoes and various mission essential equipment or devices. May be required to enter the water to accomplish these tasks.

  • Splices mooring lines, tow lines, other working lines using double-braided line and three-strand line.

  • Splices cables and performs periodic inspections and maintenance on rigging gear.

  • Loads cargo as part of weight handling team under supervision of senior persons.

  • Performs maintenance to vessels and equipment in accordance with required Preventative Maintenance Programs

  • Maintains cleanliness of vessel and accompanying equipment

  • Prepares meals while underway on occasion.

  • Assists with replenishment of fuel and water tanks when necessary.

  • Operates forklift, machine shop equipment, hand tools, drill press, grinders, band saws, sand blaster, etc.

  • Participates as certified rigger and signalman during crane lifts or weight handling events.

  • Must be able to work temporarily at other assigned ports and retain Government Travel credit card privileges.

  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Periodically accesses computer network systems to complete logs, conduct online training, research products or equipment.

Working Environment and Physical Actives

  • Works aboard assigned vessels and dinghies.

  • Must pass annual medical evaluations and required US Coast Guard medical examinations.

  • Must pass periodic random drug test.

  • Must be able to climb and descend shipboard ladders and masts safely and efficiently.

  • Must be a strong swimmer and comfortable swimming in ocean environment.

  • Must be able to climb shipboard ladders and work in cramped engine spaces.

  • Must be able to lift common deck equipment and recovery gear.

  • Work requires excessive walking, standing, crawling, kneeling or repeated stooping.

  • Must be capable of remaining at sea for up to 48 or more hours without excessive motion sickness.

  • Must be physically fit, and capable of spending extensive hours/days at sea in all weather conditions including performing emergency duties listed in the vessel Station Bill

  • Must be able to complete company specific training within 120 days of hire.

  • Must be proficient in written and verbal English language skills.

  • Lifting, Pushing/Pulling: 50+lbs

  • Work positions requirements: walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, cramped, repeated stooping sitting

  • Environmental: Customer contact, Extended Workday, Confined Work Area, Office Laboratory, Field Assignment, and Increment Weather

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School or equivalent.

  • Two years' experience as a crewperson on small boats is required.

  • Experience performing target, torpedo and oceanographic equipment recovery.

  • Needs to be comfortable working in and entering the water to accomplish recoveries.

  • Has experience operating radio and oceanographic equipment to transmit this data.

  • Experience with snorkeling equipment and comfortable working in water.

  • Experience performing daily operational tasks and general maintenance on vessels and related support equipment.

  • Minimum 360 days of experience working aboard vessels on the ocean or U.S. waters.

  • Comfortable entering the water in the open ocean with snorkel gear; SCUBA certified is highly desired.

  • Has basic computer skills in Micro Soft Word, Outlook, Excel

  • Possesses basic knowledge of common vessel equipment, nautical terms, snorkel equipment, lines, ropes, related equipment and ground tackle.

  • Must possess and maintain:

    • Valid Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)
    • United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner's Credential (MMC), with Able Seaman - SPECIAL certification (or higher) NOTE: Will accept resumes from applicants holding 50-ton Master MMC with desire to attain Able Seaman
    • Valid State Driver's License
    • Have or be able to obtain CPR/AED/1st Aid (obtained through USCG certification)
    • Have or be able to obtain Open Water SCUBA Diver certification.

Security Clearance

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret US Government Clearance. Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance. Applicants selected either must currently possess a Secret clearance or will be subject to a US Government Security Investigation and must meet eligibility requirements to obtain clearance prior to commencement of employment and maintain a security clearance for access to classified information or Closed/Restricted Areas throughout duration of employment.
