What is MLS Next?

MLS NEXT is a youth soccer league in the United States and Canada, launched by Major League Soccer in 2020. It serves as the top-tier development platform for boys’ soccer, providing elite competition, training, and exposure for youth players. The league includes hundreds of clubs and thousands of players in age groups from U13 to U19. MLS NEXT aims to develop future professional and national team players by offering high-level coaching, advanced competition, and a direct pathway to MLS and college soccer.

What are the typical responsibilities and challenges faced by a coach in the MLS Next youth development program?

As a coach in the MLS NEXT youth development program, you'll be responsible for developing young players' technical skills, fostering teamwork, and implementing age-appropriate training sessions. One common challenge is balancing the competitive nature of matches with the long-term development objectives for each athlete. You'll also collaborate closely with other coaches, athletic trainers, and sometimes even academy directors to create a holistic environment that nurtures both athletic and personal growth. Staying updated with the latest coaching methodologies and adhering to league guidelines are key components of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an MLS Next coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as an MLS Next Coach, you need a solid background in soccer tactics, youth player development, and coaching certifications such as a USSF 'A' or 'B' license. Familiarity with video analysis software, performance tracking systems, and athlete management platforms is often required. Strong leadership, effective communication, and the ability to motivate and mentor young athletes are crucial soft skills. These competencies are essential for fostering player growth, ensuring team success, and meeting the high standards of elite youth soccer development.

MLS Next is a youth development league focusing on training and developing young soccer players within the MLS academy system. A soccer coach, on the other hand, can work across various levels, from youth to adult teams, and may hold different certifications. While MLS Next coaches are specialized in youth development within a structured league, soccer coaches have broader roles across different organizations and levels.

How do you become MLS NEXT?

MLS NEXT is a youth development platform for aspiring soccer players, not a job role. To participate, players typically need to be scouted or join affiliated youth clubs that are part of the MLS NEXT program, which often requires demonstrating skill, commitment, and age eligibility. Coaches and staff involved in MLS NEXT usually need relevant coaching certifications and experience in youth soccer development.

Is it hard to get into MLS Next?

MLS Next is a youth development league for talented soccer players, and gaining entry typically requires demonstrating strong skills, competitive performance, and often participating in scouting or tryouts. While there is competition, the process emphasizes skill level and potential rather than strict barriers, making it accessible to dedicated players who meet the league's standards.
