How do Major League Baseball agents start careers?

Major League Baseball agents typically start their careers by gaining experience in sports management, law, or business, often working as assistants or in related roles to build industry knowledge and contacts. Many pursue certification through the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) and develop strong negotiation and communication skills to represent players effectively.

How do you become an MLB agent?

To become an MLB agent, you must meet the league's licensing requirements, which include passing a background check, paying licensing fees, and completing an approved certification course. Agents typically need strong knowledge of baseball, contract law, and negotiation skills, and must maintain good standing with the league's players association. Licensing is renewed annually, and agents often gain experience through internships or working with established agencies.

How much do MLB agents make?

MLB agents typically earn a commission of about 5% of their clients' contracts, which can result in earnings ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars annually depending on the success and number of players they represent. Their income is directly tied to the contracts they negotiate and can vary widely based on experience and reputation.
